Advice:
Is there anybody out there?

I'm almost forty and have struggled off and of with one type of eating disorder or another for 25 years. I have never received treatment for it. Everybody has been so focused on my bipolar. Now, I'm trying to get some help and my psychiatrist recommended a place. I went there and they said I was too complex with my psych history and out of control diabetes and none of their programs would be appropriate for me. She also said that I might feel out of place in group settings where all the clients are very young girls with anorexia and bulimia.

Is there anybody who is older who may also have a psychiatric diagnosis and what do you do for treatment?

" Hi Cathy,

I'm 41 and go to outpatient treatment and spent a few weeks in group therapy as well. I was concerned about the age thing, but found that my groups were mainly adult women. All different ages, all different ED behaviors and body shapes. When I'm there for my appt's and run into the partial hospitalization group, they look like mostly young girls, and many are very thin.

I'm also on meds for anxiety, and I see a psychiatrist every month or so at the same treatment facility. I see a dietitian there as well.

I would say keep looking. There are plenty of 30+ women in treatment for EDs, and I'm pretty sure plenty of them have other psych disorders. I also find that on here, I can relate very well to what some of the younger ladies have to say. We all struggle with the same things, regardless of age; ED doesn't just go away when you hit a certain age. :)

Good luck! I'm here if you have questions or want to chat.

" A few chicas here on DS have gone to Remuda Ranch and I'm pretty sure that they have both a program for teenagers and one for adults. I'd tell you to ask Lily (lapetitemoi) about it but currently she's off getting treatment. "

" Hi Cathy,

We have some in common. I'm 42, diagnosed with a personality disorder about 12 years ago. Doing pretty well with that the last 5 years or so, but still struggle with eating and self-injury.

I guess I don't have any advice, other than to let you know you're not alone and I hope you find the right place. I'm going to try OA tomorrow just to see if that's any help.

Hugs,
Xena "
