I have been having the following list of symptoms on and off for about 8 years now. Every test that has been done on me has come out normal. I have had a spinal tap, MRI of head and spine, evoked potentials, eeg, emg and maybe a few more but I can't remember. I have been passed off by 4 neurologists and told by a psychiatrist that I made it all up when I went to the ER with initial symptoms and they gave me the list of possibilities that could be causing my problem. Anyway, here is my list:
*spasms-everywhere *numbness and tinglin-left hand and foot (sometimes leg and arm too),left side of face and sometimes a toe or two *fatigue *blurry/double vision *unsteady gait *confusion/difficulty concentrating *loss of appetite *trouble sleeping *dizziness *unexplained facial pain I think that is the whole list. I was convinced that it was MS which is very hard to diagnose but I saw a new neuro today and he insists that I do not have MS and that it may be dystonia so he started me on Sinemet and wants to see me back in a month. So does anyone else have any of these symptoms ? Posted on 05/04/09, 06:05 pm |

This could be a possibility. It took 2 years and 3 neurologists to get the correct diagnosis.
I have dystonia in my leg and I have spasms, difficulty walking, fatigue, and trouble sleeping also. From what I have read this is a rare condition and that is why some doctors haven't even heard of it. Try reading some of the dystonia websites to learn more.

Thanks for the reply. I did have to call the neuro back because the Sinemet they put me on made everything worse so they have changed the med to Artane which seemed to be working for the first couple of days but since yesterday the spasms are back and now I also have terrible muscle cramps in my neck and the backs of my legs, it feels like a charlie horse but doesn't last long. Very painful though . I may have to call again.

My Mother was diagnosed with Dystonia, but recently found out from another Neurologist that she has a form of Parkinsonism which caused the dystonia. She started on Sinemet 10 days ago and it has already helped a bit. The Neurologist said it really takes abotu 4 weeks to show improvement. I think if you give your Medication more time it may help you. I wish you the best!

Thanks, I did decide to hold off calling and give it some more time and while I wait I am keeping a daily journal of how I feel so they can look at it when I go in again.Hope it all works out for your mom.

I have multiple scelrosis, cervical dystonia, and spasmodic dysphonia. ms, and dystonia symptoms are so similar. The mri shows the ms though and not the dystonia. Just lost my voice that is definitely dystonia.

Scotti,
Some of the symptoms you list sound familiar. My mother's right arm was numb, stiff, etc. Having been an avid tennis player for decades, my mother and the various physicians she visited, all thought it had to do with a pinched nerve or nerve degeneration from all the years of tennis playing. Then along came the unsteady gait, difficulty concentrating, "whooziness" (dizziness/confusion), etc. Two years later, she was finally diagnosed correctly with Parkinson's Disease. I'm not say that you have it, but it's probably worth getting checked out by a neurologist specializing in PD. Let me know if you want to discuss this further. Best wishes to you!
