Apraxia and writing difficulties

My son is 7 and I think he has apraxia. We live in New Zealand and no-one knows much about it here. He has been doing speech therapy since he was 3/4 and his speech is much better, however he is really struggling with handwriting and spelling. I have brought him a laptop to use at school with a programme on it Write Right which was designed for dyslexics, and I go in every day at his story writing time to help him as he can't sound at words himself. Is handwriting a particular difficulty you all have? How have you managed at school etc...... I have no-one in our town I can ask how to help my son best, so I need to do it for him.

" Handwriting I think is generally a problem for dyspraxic people; either because of co-ordination/grip problems. I am dyspraxic and dyslexic and my handwriting is much much slower than average; not sure if this is co-ordination problem or that I take more time to think about what I want to say... Sounds like you are taking some really positive steps towards developing strategies to help your son and thats the important thing. I personally could not live without my laptop and see no harm in using one if it helps me to express myself without having to waste time on handwriting. If your son is a bright, creative boy he should not be limited by physical difficulties in articulating his work. "
