My 2.75 year old son was dx with dyspraxia on 7.10.08. His receptive language was OK, but his expressive language was @ 2% (17 mos old). I knew he was delayed, but I had no idea it was so severe. He is the youngest, and has an older brother and sister (both teenagers), so I just thought he was a late talker. Anyway, he starts ST on Monday. He also has an OT eval in two weeks for possible sensory intergration.
I am really new to dyspraxia, and have been reading a ton of stuff, but it seems to be a bit overwhelming. What does this dx really mean?

" Dear Mummy, I have a website that I started (with the daily strength support) www.discuss-dispraxia.co.uk and have written a book about dyspraxia from a Mums [point of view. I hope it helps you understand and correctDyspraxia in a simple way. More and more I read about children at a very young age having speech therapy. I live in England so I take it you dont as we would never exppect children of that age to have a problem. I work everyday with SPLD children and with an exercise programme from an age of 4-5 you can correct and overcome dyspraxia and speech problems. As all children are individuals so are their rates of progress. My daughter was the same in that she never spoke at all as her siblings did and spoke for her. In her own time she spoke. Dyspraxic children have a delay in processing so tend to use information and experiences in an obsessive way as it is safe. They have already processed the information so will use it again. They are also sensitive to new information as they have to learn new experiences. If they are given the same enough times(de-sensitiseing)it will become safe.It is good that you are able to deal with Dyspraxia but please let your child grow and go at his own pace. I have worked for many many years with children and they are all different. I work in Nursary at the moment and we have had many mute children and they talk when they are ready. I have also never heard of this new term dx.Sorry! "

" Hi CyMom: it seems like we have a lot in common. My 2.25 year old son was just diagnosed too. He has had speech therapy for about 3 months and we're not seeing much progress. Feel free to contact me, It would be good to have a friend who is experiencing this at the same time.

best of luck.

ps, I'm in New England. Are you around here? "
