I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to whether an alphasmart would be more helpful to my son than a laptop. He is 10 and going up to secondary school in september.
His handwriting is illegible and we are trying to teach him keyboard skills at the moment. Posted on 01/17/08, 04:01 am |

I think at a young age it is important to make sure your son gets practice in handwriting, since this can be a problem for dyspraxics. However, typing has allowed me to express myself where I could not do so by hand. I literally cannot keep up when I am hand writing - my mind has moved on and my hand cannot keep up, so I forget what I was saying. My laptop also helps with organisation and allows me to communicate online with others - my social skills are not good. But it is important to be able to write legibly by hand too - have you tried pens with special grips?

Hi, thanks. I should have said that my son gets handwriting practice at school but his writing is practically illegible and this is after four years of one to one support at his school for his written work. He is very dyspraxic. He has fine and gross motor problems and although I'm all for advocating hand writing skills and that it is most important, the level of work and amount he will be doing at senior school will be twice as much. He will ultimately need either a laptop or alphasmart to keep up with classwork and homework

Please read my free website I set up for parents like yourself.www.discuss-dyspraxia.co.uk. My son had the same problem but unfortunately he didnt have access to such technology. He ended up though, as a trained chef and had verbal exams. As I explain in my website I use an exercise programme daily. Children are given to me to screen when learning is a problem. They write in snakes (no spaces) there handwriting is terrible to read as motor skills are weak. Following the programme all these difficulties are strengthened. I have had a child who was reception age in Literacy, able to read at stage 5 and in six months use joined up writing beautifully. A child without this intervention will never get better as it is like rubbing a blister it just gets worse. Please read about Jack.
