hi, my son just started pre-k and is showing some early signs of dyslexia. his dad has dyslexia and wasnt diagnosed until his senior year in high school causing him to struggle and he still has trouble with it. ive been told by the school system that once he starts kindergarten if he falls behind he will be remediated until they test him, which they wont do until he is 8yrs old. that just is not acceptable to me. is that really how they do it??? there has to be some way to diagnose him before then so we can help him now, not later. any advice or experience is appreciated! thanks!

" I am Dyslexic, but was brought up in Africa. I know there my parents took me to see an educational Psychologist, when they found I was having problems at school. He did the testing and made the diagnoses. Here in the US we suspected that my son was ADD, but the school would do any thing as he wasn't doing badly enough, so I spent time looking into how to get the problem diagnosed. Psychologists specialize in different areas. Look on the Internet and see what the psychologists in your area cover. Call them and ask if they have someone doing testing for this. If not where can you get it done. I know from my medical insurance
That if you can't find a specials in a reasonable distance in network, you can get a primary care physician to send you to the psychologies/ psychiatrist you need to go to. Don't wait for the Schools when it comes to your child’s life and well-being.
Hope this helps. "

" the main indicators of dyslexia can take time to present. what you can do in the mean time is keep an eye on him. there are basic tests that you can go through on line. however as most of it is reading and writting based so it needs time to develop.

early indicator are clumsyness, mixing numbers and letters, late bed wetting (gross but true), slow reading, lazy eye can also be an indicator. like i said some of these wont present untill he gets a bit older.

good luck. "
