Eye Pain- Dry Eyes or something else?

I hope you don't mind me telling my eye pain story..
It started when I was about 16- 1999. Was using the computer as usual, but then suddenly felt a sharp pain pierce my eyes. Felt like thick needles pricking the back of my eyes. The problem has been reoccurring ever since… To start with, I could remedy it by staying away from the computer for a day or limiting my time using the computer. A day’s rest could then allow a few weeks of constant computer use. After a few years (2001), the pains would kick in at different severities every other day (while using the computer) A year after that (2002), my eyes would hurt almost every time I used the computer (which was almost every day). Over the last 2-5 years my eyes have continued to get worse still... Currently: Eyes hurt every time I watch TV or use the computer. After I finish watching a screen, the pain usually continues until bed time and through to the next day. Any kind of screen- cathode, lcd, projectors, mobile phone screens all irritate and cause my eyes pain. Where as; drawing, writing on paper, reading books don’t seem to harm me. Driving for long periods (more than 40 minutes) have been causing eye pain (as of 2007). I often deliberately sleep longer hours 10+ hours a night just to help my eyes rest, although I still often wake up with uncomfortable / painful eyes. • My right eye usually hurts worst and requires me to tape it closed for between 2 and 12 hours a day to minimize discomfort. • The sensation of pain I get continues to vary. Sometimes it feels like; needles in the back of my eyes, grit in my eyes, severely tired/strained eyes, aching or dry eyes. Right eye usually starts hurting first and hurts most. • Also I experience migraines- usually one each month requiring as much paracetamol as I can take, while lying down in a dark room for most of the day. Occasionally being sick. Prior to when I was 16 I used to watch a lot of TV and play video games (through the TV)- Despite frequent ‘screen watching’ since I was a child, it had never caused me pain until I was 16, and frequent pain from about the age of 18. I wonder if I am suffering from dry eyes or something else? Although it seems that much of my problem stems from computer or tv screen use, it is very difficult to take these things out of my lifestyle. Screens are everywhere! Posted on 05/22/09, 09:05 pm |

The best thing to do is go see your eye docter. You might need glasses, it could be dry eyes, etc. When it comes to your eyes and your sight, you dont want to play around and try to figure things out yourself.

Thanks for your reply bmason. Luckily my sight is fine, unfortunately none of the eye docs I've seen have agreed on a diagnosis or been able to to come up with a way to prevent the pains I get so not sure what to do. Thought I'd see if anyone else on the forum suffered from similar experiences or might be able to give me some clues?

It sounds like your just straining your eyes. My daughter who is 28 gets these kinds of pains when she's been reading alot or on the computer alot. she'll have to stop and put a cold compress on her eyes. when your on the computer for a long period of time you need to take a break and let your eyes focus on other things.
