Celiac disease (1/133 people) can cause MGD?

After 4 years with MGD (meibomian gland dysfunction), I'm optimistic that I am as good as cured by knowing I am allergic to wheat and barley. I've been eating a strict gluten free diet for a week now and my eyes are doing great. I had been using lotemax drops (steroids) to keep my eyes under control, but I've stopped those now too. I know there are many causes of MGD but it may be worth investigating if celiac is causing MGD in other patients.
My sister has celiac disease, so there was a good chance I was going to have it too. I told 6 MDs my sister had celiac disease when they were checking out my MGD and only one (the most recent) thought that my MGD could be caused by celiac disease. Even living with someone with celiac I had no idea it could cause dry eyes. I hope this helps someone. Here's a good page for info on celiac: http://www.csaceliacs.org/ Posted on 04/14/09, 03:04 pm |
