HI.. as we grow older many times our eyes get dry. Go to an opthamologist (not optometrist) and explain your symptoms. I think you may find some relief, whatever the cause.
Good luck and hugs :) Geyedlady@yahoo.com

ONE of my eye doctors suggested taking fish oil caps twice a day for dry eyes and says he recommends it to all his patients during the winter especially. I tried it and it worked. My OTHER eye MD had said no contacts right now due to irritation (my eyes are bulged some due to graves' disease unfortunately). BUT, I DID try the caps for about 4 days, then retried my contacts and even fell asleep in them and NO irritation or redness. WOW! My ENDO MD recommends artificial tear drops. No red eye drops cause your eyes can adjust to them and then when you DON'T use them they redness can come back even worse. :) Hope this helps some. The fish oil caps can cause a burp of fishy tasting burp (sorry to be gross) but I only have one burp after each cap and it's not overwhelming, just a little bit of a taste. Just to be honest. But it's SO worth it. That's the only side effect. Very mild, and only one burp. :)

For some people it can be the climate where they are or the type of heating their home uses. Some types of heat are very dry and will irritate some conditions. As another post also mentions(different thread) there is also a condition names Sjogrens. You should talk to a doc and describe your symptoms. Either an eye doc or a family doc may be able to help you. These days the ones where I am will recommend both natural over the counter type remedies or perscriptions if they are required. Most though often seem to suggest eye drops for this. There are a few types of those as well and if worse comes to worst I have heard of a pill to help deal with it.

Youve received great advice...let me add to some other causes to check out:
1) Decreased corneal sensation decreases tear production, and there are a number of reasons for decreased corneal sensation. 2) These include diabetes, long-term hard contact lens wear, herpes zoster, LASIK eye 3) Seasonal allergies are also well known culprits in dry eyes 4) Other causese: Autiommune diseases (sjogrens, rheumatoid arthritis), Parkinsons patients get dry eyes Dr O.

I just wanted to let you guys know that there is a new patient support group in europe working on dry eye awareness. It would be great to have a similar initiative in the US

My doctor gave me eye drops called Systane, which work really for me. They seem to last longer than other brands I've tried.

My eyes were so dry that my vision became a bit blurred. My optometrist said I would need glasses soon, but then my doctor sent me to a eye specialist who said I had dry eyes. My vision is now fine, except when I don't put the eye drops in for a while. Anyway my point was that I have had dry eyes for a couple of years now, and 5 months ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and a symptom is dry eyes. Therefore, you might want to get a general check up at the doctor, just in case your dry eyes are caused by another illness/cause.
