Sorry is this sounds gross to some of you, but it works for me. :)
ONE of my eye doctors suggested taking fish oil caps twice a day for dry eyes and says he recommends it to all his patients during the winter especially. I tried it and it worked. My OTHER eye MD had said no contacts right now due to irritation (my eyes are bulged some due to graves' disease unfortunately). BUT, I DID try the caps for about 4 days, then retried my contacts and even fell asleep in them and NO irritation or redness. WOW! My ENDO MD recommends artificial tear drops. No red eye drops cause your eyes can adjust to them and then when you DON'T use them they redness can come back even worse. :) Hope this helps some. The fish oil caps can cause a burp of fishy tasting burp (sorry to be gross) but I only have one burp after each cap and it's not overwhelming, just a little bit of a taste. Just to be honest. But it's SO worth it. That's the only side effect. Very mild, and only one burp. :) Posted on 02/11/07, 06:02 pm |

Yes wearing contacts if you have dry eyes is a bad idea. I was told under no circumstances should I ever wear contacts due to the extent of my dry eye problem. For those with a milder case of dry eyes, extended wears with eye drops might be ok I was told.
I do take omega 3/6/9 caps. So far those had made no noticable difference for my eyes. I take them for the mix of health issues I have and wasn't actually told to take them for dry eyes. So it's new to me to hear mention of them for that.

No, this is not gross, far from it. I have severe dry eyes and I am searching for a natural remedy. I have started taking not only fish oil capsules but also liquid flaxseed oil which I have read is even more helpful for dry eyes. Has anyone else gone down ths road? How much of these supplements do you have to take every day, and how long does it take to be gan to see results, and then for maximum effect?

To Cory--one tablespoon a day of flax seed is recommended; can take 30 to 60 days to see an effect, I hear. I'm on my second week and hoping ...

I take (some days I forget sadly) 1000mg of fish oil and 1000mg of flax. I do have a 1200mg of I think the flax that I got on sale with the others. I've heard those are very good doses. My chiropractor recently told me that the US has an abundance of omega 3 in our food but a huge lack of omega 6 and 9. Fish oil provides at least the 6. Good to know eh? ;)

Has anyone tried Nature's Tears EyeMist? I got a sample from my eye doctor and really liked it. It's a fine mist that instantly relieved the dryness and irritation.

One of your replies is inaccurate as to the prevalance of Omegas 3,6, and 9 in the diet. I refer you to the above URL for correction. Omega 3 is the anitinflammatory fat that is essential. It is not as prevalent in the diet as Omegas 6 and 9. Refer the chiropractor to the article about the Omegas.
