Dry eyes is an eye disease caused by decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation. Symptoms include burning and a sandy-gritty eye irritation that gets worse as the day goes on. The symptoms are often caused by a loss of water from the tears that results in tears that are too "salty" or hypertonic.

Dry Eye with autoimmune disease

I was bothered by itchy, red eyes and blurriness. I had noticed that when my mother passed away I couldn't cry. When I went to the eye doctor I mentioned this and she tested my eyes and said that I had extremely dry eye syndrome. I also have rheumatoid arthritis so she says I am at risk for Sjogrens. She gave me a prescription for Restasis and said it could take up to five months to work. She said to use that twice a day and to use Systane Balance eye drops 4-6 times a day. Well, 6 months later and my eyes still get itchy, red and I at times have to put a cool compress on my eyes because they burn. I did notice that I was getting a bit of moisture in my eyes the other day. Anyone else get these symptoms on restasis?

I have Sjorgrens. There are blood tests you can have done to rule out Sjorgrens. Good luck!

Both arthritis and sjogrens can add to dry eye symptoms.. Sometimes, eye drops are not suitable. try changing your diet and staying away from triggers like harsh winds and consuming too much sugar. Check out my website for more great dry eye tips

I too have an auto immune disease and dry eye. I was wondering if the two had any coloration. My eye symptoms are like yours with the exception of constant tearing. Tears just stream down my eyes all day. I don't think I gave Restatis a long enough of a try.

I too have severe dry eye syndrome. I also have RA. I also have.....on.....and on!!! When you have found effective things -- please post. I would really appreciate it.

I think I know you from the RA forum. Yes, I have both the auto immune *and* the dry eye.

Besides the blurring, stinging, itching and tearing -- I can't wear make-up which made me feel so much more attractive :0(

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
