Does anyone else have the problem where your child decides that poop is actually a paint? My son takes his diaper off and smears poop all over the walls and stuff.. he looks so proud of himself and I have tried many different tactics to get him to stop. I of course change him immediately but often he goes poop in the night and wakes up and plays with it before we are up!! Or he chooses to strip naked while I am nursing the baby or something.
It's very frustrating and I am at my wits end! It's impossible to be mad with him because he just flashes that smile and, well, you know the rest I'm sure! Any suggestions? Posted on 09/11/09, 10:09 am |

It sounds to me like your son is showing awareness and may be ready for some intensive potty training. I think Karen is the woman with advice here , ( mymeg ) and I am sure she will chime in !! Katie xx

I know exactly how fustrated you are with this behavior, because my daughter was doing the same thing. I'm not sure how old your son is, but Katie may be right where its time to start some serious potty training. When Meg would wipe her poop all over herself, I would take her gently, but firmly into the bathroom, strip her down and put her in the shower, which she hated, to wash her up. All the while I would let her know how upset with her I was. You might want to fake crying, Meg didn't like to see me cry. If you check the second page of this discussion board, read the topic "Hooray, we did it". I go into more detail and had gotten a lot of feedback. I know how hard it is to be mad at them when they exhibit such behavior, but I wasn't going to tolerate this any longer. Hope this helps!

Michael never went through that stage, but Jenna his sister (without DS) would wake up from nap poop and proceed to wipe it all over her crib, bedding, walls, curtain, etc. I was sooo frustrated, but she was too young to train. She did out grow it after me (really crying because it was very unpleasant). It was awhile before she gave up and I put the plastic training pants over her diaper so she couldn't get it off as easy! Good Luck

Emma does this and so have all of my kiddos....my 5 year old with Autism does it weekly....OT and Developmental have told me its a sensory problem....If you think he likes the feel of it....give him more finger paints and let him paint with peanutbutter or play with playdough.....if you think its a sensitivity to feeling icky......its alitlle harder unless potty training is really do-able.....We also do the shower thing....kids hate showers....but at first we made the mistake of giving him baths and he loves baths....so make sure however you clean it up.....and he should be cleaning as much as he can......that its quick and emotionless.....give him nothing to feed on....
