fiances vertigo - Epley negative results?

My fiancé has vertigo. It's almost debilitating.
It started last fall seemingly coincident with a middle ear infection that went undiagnosed for a few weeks. The ear infection immediately followed a plane from LAX to DFW. She is in her late forties. Hypothyroid but medicated and recently tested and in normal range. Another perhaps relevant piece of information is that she weaned herself off of Effexor over a month or two starting in Feb. 2008. She had terrible withdrawal with vertigo being one of the symptoms. Headaches another. But eventually the vertigo went away. And headaches. (until the ear infection) She visited an ENT and then a neurologist. Tentatively diagnosed with BPPV. But was advised to wait it out. Neurologist didn't seem to be terribly supportive or knowledgeable in this area. After researching the Epley maneuver, we decided to do it on her last night. Although she felt terrible during the three cycles, I would not have thought it would have negative lingering effect, but it has. I didn't expect an overnight success but certainly hadn't read of any downside except during the actual procedure. Should Epley cause lingering bad effects? What might that indicate? She is at wit's end, and is feeling scared and without hope with this seemingly progressing disorder. She is looking for balance disorder specialist, oto-neurologist, or neurotologist, or some practitioner that has explicit care giving in this realm and is caring, in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Thanks much for any advice. Posted on 06/17/09, 10:06 pm |

when i first had the epley done i was told not to lay flat for 5 days and slept sitting up also not to bend down for 48 hrs....beacause what the elpey does is moves the calcium particles into a place that wont cause you any problems.
Did you stay in each postion long enough...there is something that you can buy called a DIZZYFIX which helps with the exersize...i have been really lucky and found someone who seems to do mine well...but remember to be careful after having it done so as not to move them again ok...hope this helps

sorry just another thought did the vertigo come on when moving the head say from the left to right or up and down this would be BPPV or the vertigo could be to do with the ear infection...research MENIERS too and see what that throws up ok

Thank you lynnsmith.
Cindy felt better today than yesterday - meaning the extra dizziness/intensity was gone and back to her normal baseline, but no improvement. She is hesitant to do the Epley again. I will pass along your Epley details and see if she's up to another session. We stayed in each of the supine positions a bit longer than 30 seconds each. We did 3 cycles.

You shouldn't do the Epley at home, it is better to have someone that is trained to do it. I have a great recommendation for you in the Austin area, call her up and see if she can help you find someone closer to your area, or maybe she might be willing to do the drive out to you. Her name is Ann Katz and she is a PT in Austin, Tx , she specializes in home care physical therapy, and vestibular rehabilitation. She can help you and give you the best advice about what to do, and who to see in your area.

Thank you shrinkingviolet.
I did some searches for Ann Katz in Austin and didn't get any hits. Do you have a number for her? Or web site? Do you have any experience with the DIZZYFIX gizmo? Is it foolproof and produce results equal to PT?

I wouldn't put my faith in the gizmo just yet--I am not certain that it has been thoroughly tested. The studies available on the website only demonstrate that it is effective with "in person coaching", so that would suggest the device is not effective if you just buy one and follow the directions.
I will PM you Ann's email.

Hi as i live in the uk i guess our specialist think differently iv'e been told once you know how to do the Epley you can safely do it at home and i have done it but only the once...firstly get someone who can show you how its done.. my husband went with me to all my appointments so knows how to do it..it is still scary though but doing the Epley in the right order should clear thing up if its BPPV.

I feel for your fiance because I have the same issue. I can't enen drive most days. Mine started with a inner ear infection and trying to come down from Prednisone. I had horrible spins and went to the ER three times. I have had epplys done 3 times and even did some physical therapy for 6 months. Never goes completely away. I no longer get spins just an overall off balance and I have to sleep sitting up most nights.
She may get some help with a professional epplys and some rehab. Bunkie
