Hi, am I a 29yr old female after coming back from a trip on a plane, had some fluid in my ears and then was dizzy/off balance for approx. 1 month before I got to see a doc. After seeing him and him basically saying to wait it out... I woke up one morning and out of the blue I had a really bad dizzy spell (room spinning and throwing up). I got to see an ENT and he diagnosed me with BPV. I am wondering if anyone has actually made it through this... the doc said it should take 6 weeks to clear up... the symptoms seem to be subsiding but still unnerving and really annoying I have felt right since February.
Please anyone who has a positive story to share please send it my way!! I could use some positivity!!! :) Posted on 05/06/09, 02:05 pm |

If you have BPPV it won't "just go away". I would get to another doctor at this point. Look for a neuro-otologist. They specialize in balance disorders. If you do have BPPV, they can perform a procedure called the Epley maneuver on you to treat it. The fact that you got this on a plane makes me think that it might be something else, like a ruptured eardrum, called a fistula. So please see if you can find a specialist to help you.

Hi, if it truly is BPPV, the Epley Manouver will CURE it. It can be performed by any Chiropractor or Physio Therapist who has been trained. They can then show you how to do it yourself. I have had two episodes of BPPV over the past 7-8 years and both times my physio cured it with two treatments. If you need help finding a trained Physio, let me know we have a listing of qualified practitioners. Jacke P, Past President, BC Balance And Dizziness Disorders. BADD BalanceAndDizziness.org

Update...I have been going to a Chiropractor for the past week or so, he has done the Epley maneuver on me 4 times now and has also treated my upper back and neck to release the tension that has accumulated from holding my head so stiff due to the dizziness. It has been helping me immensely! I have very minimal dizziness when I lie down now and no longer have that heavy heavy feeling in my head. I must say that I am beginning to feel the light at the end of the long long tunnel! I know I am not in the clear just yet but definitely getting there! I highly recommend the Epley manueuver to all those who are suffering! It's not an easy fight!

Hi everyone:
How do you know whether a chiropractor is trained to do the Epley? I am very frustrated because there is so much red tape for me to get to my vestibular rehab place (referrals, insurance approval, and then I wait and wait for an appointment). I need to find other people who can help me, since I am too chicken and anxiety-ridden to do the Epley by myself. The vertigo is so traumatic for me, I think I really need the support of another human being... someone to ease me through the Epley. Sigh.

Hi, contact your local Physiotherapy or Chiropractic Association and ask them for a referral for a practitioner trained in the Epley manouver. Anyone can help you do it yourself once the practitioner has showed you. I taught my chiropractor and my husband how to help me do it in a matter of minutes and it was easy. Hope that helps, and YES you can cure BPPV if that truly is what's wrong

i was the same way you are with the vertigo anxiety. I was so afraid of the Epley.Just to think of the it activating the vertigo would send my anxiety thur the roof.I completely understand you and know what you are going thur. I still have the BPV. I just sleep kinda elevated. It has worked for me for about 5yrs now.If i do lie down completely i will get the vertigo. If you want to talk just messsage me.

Wow Redmj I thought I was the only one who slept propped up. I can't lay down either. If I do the next day I am dizzy. I have had eply 2 times and it helps some but not totally. Glad I am not alone with this stuff.

I just saw my regular doctor as a follow up for an emergency room visit for the 1st ever bad dizzy spell (ER doc said it was positional vertigo). My doctor examined me and everything was a-okay (except, that is, for the vertigo). If it continues to get worse, she'll refer me to a specialist. The symptoms are less severe now, but I still feel "not normal" (dizzy when I roll over or bend any which way). Sometimes I can't stand it (no pun intended). I've read that people have had it for many years with few attacks and many have coped with it. I hope I can do the same.
