vestibular neuritis

Do any of you know about this? This is my first time on this site. 9 Months ago I was having dinner and all of a sudden lost my balance. Since that day I have had chronic "dizziness". The Doc's call it vertigo, but I'm a little confused, thinking vertigo meant "room spins". The room never spins, but I haven't had a minute since that day without feeling dizzy, foggy head, wavy, or like I'm on a boat. There are times that are better and worse, but it's always there. I also feel fatigued most of the time. All of this has led to severe depression and anxiety. I've had a Mri and been tested for MS, I've seen a cardiologist. Finally got the diagnosis of vestibular neuritis. My Doc says there's nothing he can do, and says it COULD just go away after months maybe a year. Anyone experience this same thing? I'm very frustrated, this has consumed my life.

" thanks for your reply. I kept asking my Doc if I was the only one with these type of symptoms. Did your symptoms completely go away? Did you feel foggy all the time? I feel like it's my head, not a inner ear problem. It's very frustrating to not have any treatment options. The only thing we do is try steroids over and over when my symptoms are the worst. "

" i feel it all in my head too, the doctor said there is nothing wrong with my inner ear, no fluid and such i mostly feel it in my forehead, cheeks, nose, filled up feeling with pressure. i have also tried steriods but to no avail. have you tried antihistamines? my symptoms never go away. i feel foggy and tired alot of the time yes, i think its because of being off balance all the time, its emotionally and physically tiring. when i got over it 5 years ago, they eventually went away about 95%, sometimes when the balance would get off, i would pop my ears and be better, its not working like that this time. "

" Your sympoms sound alot like sinus problems. have they done a sinus ct?? I don't think steroids help me either, the only benefit is they give me energy, but there are also side effects i don't like. I don't feel pressure in my ears. Mostly heavy head, foggy and dizzy all the time, it's hard to get off the couch. when i'm up and around alot, my symptoms get worse. The ringing in my ears drives me crazy, it's loud, i sleep with a fan on. So you were better for 5 years, and now it's back?? I'm sorry to hear that, what other tests have they done? "

" yeah, it sucks, its back again and worse. they did an MRI and said I have sinusitis with eustachion tubes that are swollen, thats what the zpak i take is for, just finished course 2 of 3, and for the tubes gave me prednisone, then methylprednisone, which didnt help, only made me eat more and have more energy. i also take the antivert, it doesnt help, same as you, just makes me tired. i had the hearing test, which was low on the normal range, use veramyst nasal spray. thats about it. nothing works. i go back on the 25th to the ENT, see what he says. " So with vertigo there are different types of sensations and it can depend on whats going on with that vestibular system. Sometimes it feels as if the world is spinning in your head, sometimes you think you actually see the world moving, or sometimes its just you feel really light headed. They are all different versions of the same thing.

The reason for the fatigue is because when you experience a bout of vertigo your muscles tighten to try to keep you upright and prevent you from falling. That takes a lot of energy! Fatigue is very very very common.

Vertigo also brings about anxiety because once people have an attack they fear another one. Its also common to have a panic attack during the vertigo so its really important to try to stay as calm as you can.

It can take a very long time to go away but general practicioners do not have very much experience at all with vestibular stuff so its not a bad idea to go to a specialist and ask further questions. "

" i guess i figured the ENT was the specialist, but he said take the zpak, the methylprednisone, and that there is only so much doctors can do! For me I have had 5 really dizzy episodes, all the time its like a hard to focus, off balance, like on a boat feeling. When the bad attacks occur, i take an antivert and breathe slowly. I wish there were more answers, with so many people suffering and for such long periods of time. "
