A little over 3 wks ago, I woke up dizzy. It wasn't long (I went back to bed) and the room was spinning. After about 4 hours, I was nauseous and every time I got up, I was dizzy and had to hurry back to lay down. I wound up in an emergency outpatient facility where they did bloodwork and gave me something for the nausea and Antivert for the dizziness. The bloodwork came back OK.
5 days later I went to my dr and she wanted a CT scan and bloodwork was repeated. Bloodwork was still OK and CT scan came back normal. 2 days after that, I decided that I felt better and so I quit taking the Antivert (Meclizine). That night, my eyes were weird. If I looked around, moving only my eyes, not my head, my eyes felt weird. Kinda big, or something. The next morning, I was jittery, and my eyes were still weird. I made an appt with the ENT. I also started the meclizine back. I really only felt floaty at night......OK during the day, but maybe that was because of the Meclizine. The next week, an audiologist did the Epley and I was so nauseous after that. She did it twice and said my eyes were not as twitchy the 2nd time. I called back last week because I still don't feel good. This time I saw someone different and she did the Epley with an oscillator (???) and I was not nauseous after that. However, I am still jittery without the Meclizine and very nervous. Like something bad is going to happen. She wanted me to stop taking it, but I can't. I made it Thurs and Fri without it but I felt like my eyes were crossing this morning and I took some med. What is this??????? I feel crazy. Laura Posted on 08/22/09, 09:08 pm |

If the meclizine is working for you, then don't stop taking it just yet. You might need a few epley sessions, or some time to get over this. It may be too soon for you to stop taking the meclizine, and as long as it is helping you, then keep taking it. Many people with dizziness get no help from the meclizine, so you are lucky that it is working for you. Just relax, and give it some time--you may want to start looking around for a vestibular therapist, as the next step for you might be a round of vestibular therapy to help with your recovery.

Thank you!
Do some people get the panicky feeling and weird eyes and the Meclizine doesn't help? Laura

laura,
Absolutely. I felt the same way. I felt this way when i first started getting the symptoms. Because its new, you dont know how to handle it. You wonder are you going crazy? How long is it going to last? Why Me? And it will make you depressed. Having a vestibular disorder can be very scary. Try and see a vestibular specialist. I am with you on this, its no fun! And it sucks! But it can get better with the proper meds and exercises. I dont think you where properly diagnosed yet. Once you find out what kind of vestibular disorder you have, you can go from there. Try to hang in there Laura. I know its going to be a rough road. Sometimes it helps to come here for support..there are tons of other places to go too. And just knowing your not alone. And in many cases it goes away for a long time.

Yes, there are many people that the meclizine doesn 't help at all. I wouldn't take the advice of the audiologist about stopping it--talk to your doctor. Like I said, if it is helping you there is no reason not to take it.

Dizzybabe,
Do you have to take any meds? If so, what? I noticed this morning that I am still jittery and my eyes were sort of funny, even with the Meclizine. I am thinking they need to give me something different for the jitters. I tell you, Saturday, I thought my head would explode. I was so scared and my heart was racing. If they don't want me on Meclizine, they need to prescribe something else. Laura

Hi Laura,
The Antivert wasn't working for me. Made me very sleepy, groggy and dizzy. I guess it would be OK if i didn't have littler kids running the house! Someone suggested taking half of one just when symptoms are around. Right now, I'm taking Lipoflavinoids supplements, and Nortriptyline 10mg at bedtime. I watch what I eat too..like SALT chocolate and caffeine is a big time no-no for me. Unless i cheat for a chocolate chip cookie sometimes. But that's on a GOOD day. I too feel that weird jittery funky feeling too. I tell my husband, "look at my hands...He just grab them and kiss them. My eyes are weird sometime like they can just roll in the back of my head or something. Its just horrible. And Laura, it has gotten to the point where I'm like this crap isn't going to ruin my life. I try and stay busy instead of sitting or laying around because you tend to think about it more when your not active. Or IF you can be active, sometimes you cant. But when you cant..watch a funny movie or something. Or just try to relax as much as you can with your head propped up. Stress triggers spin too. If they give you something for jitters, nine times out of ten its going to be Xanax or valium..Basically the same thing. I personally try to stay away from that stuff. But it works good for others. It is to help take the edge off. Maybe you should ask your doctor for something tohelp relax you. Medication is one of those thing where you have to see how it affects you. i dot want to tell you dont take this because i dont. It may work for you. This disorder can easily take over..don't let it! But i know its hard. At church last Sunday, the pastor said that God gives us obstacles in life to remind you that you need him forever and always. That's what i try to focus on too. Because on my good days, (and i had some last weekend BTW.) (Took the kids out for a photo shoot at the park!)I thanked him for that. Its hard to keep things in perspective when you are suffering. But sometime, spiritually, you will get through it. I'm sorry for rambling on. And for taking so long for a response. If you want to email me and talk please feel free to ask. For some reason I check the box if a respond had been added but i dont get anything but a daily strength newsletter. Right now i feel weird..its always worse when I'm about to get my monthly.

I had my eyes checked Tues (he said everything looked OK) and the dr wanted an MRI so I got that done yesterday and I am sure they will have the results today. I am trying hard not to panic but mostly I'm a mess today. At least if you get jittery too, then maybe it's not going to be something bad when they call me. I am so scared of what they are going to tell me.
It really helps to have this board to vent and get support. I am so glad I found it!! And you're right. I have been thinking the whole time that God has allowed this to keep me close to him. To make me see that apart from Him, I am nothing. Laura

Good luck Laura. MRI results can be very stressful. Think positive! Keep us posted. I got a feeling they aren't going to see anything.
