In Feb of this year i went up to the hospital with annoying shooting pains they didn't hurt just bothersome i thought maybe i was blocked and needed to be flushed out, Dr came in told me i was to be admitted immediately. I was by myself hubby thought it was my appendix they did a cat scan came and told me it wasn't my appendix they weren't sure it was showing a black mass i was so scared I'm 28yrs i have no hand (right) and was thinking now what!! Come to find out i had cecal diverticulitis and had blown out 6inches of my large intestine and didn't even feel it Dr said if i didn't go up that day i would of been dead the following. I went in thinking i was just constipated and didn't come out for 2 weeks! I was traumatized. I went up this past Saturday with pains and they cat scanned again everything was fine low grade fever and high white blood cell count said i had an infection and treated me with antibiotics. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on foods or what do to so this doesn't happen again. Also, if anyone has had phantom pains since. They also removed my appendix even though it was healthy just so i wouldn't ever have a problem...its been since Feb but i still have a hard time sleeping..knowing i didn't feel it happen would love any advice possible.

I read this a few times now and I guess I don't understand what happened. Did your bowels perforate? I am new to this diverticulitis so I don't know much yet, but If I am understanding you right your perforated and you didn't know it? Did you have a fever at least? How long were you constipated for?Have you considered using something like Metamucil when you start to get constipated? I use it and I find it to be effective yet not harsh.

Yes, apparently it had perforated. I didn't have a fever it had dropped dangerously low to 95.5oF and i had been making very very small bowel movements they said from what was left in the one intestine made it through to pass. My mother's a nurse and if it wasn't for her worried about the low temp when i called i never would of went up to the hospital and known what has happened.

OH my , what a difficult experience for you to go through. And to have it happen so suddenly, without warning. You did the right thing in going to the hospital, even if you didn't know why. And your Mom's concern, right on, and you listened to her, too. Sometimes God works through other people to help us , and it seems like that happened here for you with all that has been involved. This is scary, but give yourself time , both to heal, and to work with your doctors to figure more of it out.
I am only beginning to deal with diverticulitis, but i have had a number of other issues other the past two years, that have complicated my situation, i.e. gastric erosion, food allergies, candidas, significant weight loss, and i know how frustrated i have felt at times, to not be able to predict or know the next step and what to do. Hang in there. You are healing. Keep us posted.
