Has anyone been told to take Miralax?

I had my first diverticulitis attack 3 weeks ago. Spent the night in the ER and got a diagnosis from the CT scan. Flagyl and Cipro cleared it up, but I still have moderate pain depending on what I eat (today is not a good day). I'm not up to handling a lot of fiber yet. I ate some black beans & rice yesterday and I think that was too much too soon. I hope to never have another attack, so I'm searching for information and advice. All your postings are very helpful.
My doctor told me to take Miralax every day. A capful is mixed with a glass of water. The Miralax changes the composition of the water so it is not absorbed by the body, therefore it passes as liquid to the bowels and results in softer bowel movements. Has anyone else been told to use this? Posted on 11/03/09, 03:11 pm |

I have heard we should avoid all laxatives because they can aggravate the problem. Did you get Miralax in the hospital? Hospitals usually give bowel rest and antibiotics only. Who knows?
Do not worry about slight pain as stool moves though the bowels. It can hurt as it passes the injured area. Just like a scar on your hand will hurt for a long time after a cut. The passing pain does not mean the cut is about to open. Diverticulitis attacks come on quick and cannot be predicted IMO. Real attack pain is in a single spot, comes on hard, does not let up, and will hurt real bad if you press on the area with you hand. Fever and feeling bad also usually come with the pain. Those are my experiences. If you feel pretty good, have no fever, and the pain passes in a short time, enjoy life. You may never get another severe attack. You may get many more attacks no matter what you do including, eating only a limited diet, being on Mesalazine, or having the surgery. It is a crapshoot. If you do have the symptoms I mentioned, stop eating. Start thing about heading to the ER if things get worse. Never wait for an appointment. Best Wishes, John

Hi 4strikes
Just this week my doctor recommended Miralax to me. Just had an episode 2-3 weeks ago. Seven years ago I was hospitalized for 4 days for diverticulitis. Since this last episode seems whatever I eat bothers me and bloates me. I was taking Metamucil fiber pills to help move things along before this most recent episode. Since then my doctor suggested I not take the fiber pills and switch to the Miralax. I am on day 4 with it and so far so good. Have you started using it yet? I am not a fan of the taste right now but am trying to find ways to mix it in a juice or something to mask it.

The taste doesn't bother me, so I'm ok with that. I've been taking it daily for the past 3 weeks, and it does keep things moving. Yesterday, however, I ate some veggie stirfry around 5pm and then drank Miralax around 7pm. I felt started feeling worse and worse througout the evening, and in the middle of the night threw everything up. I was thinking it was something separate, like a flu-bug, but today I'm thinking it's all relelated to the diverticulitis, cause I feel bloated just like I did 4 weeks ago before the diverticulitis attack occurred. I can't eat anything without hurting. Can vomiting be part of it, or could it be a flu?
