My first 'diagnosed' attack

Hi everybody, im Mandy and have just this week been diagnosed with diverticulitis after about 6 days with lower left stomach pains. Due to the fact that less than two weeks ago I started taking beta blockers for anxiety i had previously put the pains down to side effects.

My doctor said it was this condition, gave me five days worth of 2 different antiobiotics and sent me home without any other advice.

I'm now reading the threads on this great site and am flabbergasted that I got no warnings that this could turn serious. He acted like it was on the same level as a sore throat!!

I've now been on the tablets for 3.5 days and I suppose generally it is getting better as pains are mostly mild but stabbing and seem to only be bad in the evening.

How long do the antibiotics generally take to work from your experiences? and how do you know if things have taken a turn for the worse and you need medical attention?

Thanks for any replies
Mand : )

" I know your fear, I live with it also. I found an online eating plan (Great Taste, No Pain) which seems to help line you out when you've had a severe bout. Although I know I should, I don't follow it to a "T". And although it allows for nuts and seeds, I had been eating both when I had my last severe episode so I have banned those myself. I do eat take out probably more often than I should and seem to do ok. However, yesterday I had Chinese food and last night and today I have had those too familiar twinges and side pain. So I'll be avoiding that again any time soon. I thinks everyone is different and has to find what their triggers seem to be. Keeping a food and symptom journal will be a great way to monitor what bothers you most. In the meantime, I will continue to cross my fingers and take my probiotics and garlic pills. Hope this has been of some help! Donna "

" I can't take probiotics. I'm not sure why but any form makes me ill. Fiber supplements don't work for me either.

I have to be very careful what I eat. I don't vary much anymore. You have to learn what bothers you. Red meat, spices, pizza, fried foods, sweets, all bother me among other things. So I stay away.

I think that is why it's hard to define things about this disease. Everyone can have a different experience.

One thing I think we can all agree on is pain. Not a good thing. Don't eat anything but clear liquids to let the bowel rest a couple days when having an attack. "

" I actually don't think so. I go through several heads of garlic in a week to 2 week period (I LOVE garlic!) and I still use the odorless garlic pills. I don't know how they work but they do seem to help and I started taking them because of several other people on here who mentioned that it had helped them. I think maybe when you cook the garlic, it loses some of its potency. "

" Garlic cooked or eaten raw never gets to the colon. The no odor pills have a hard shell on them that delviers them to the colon before they open just like the Mesalazine I am on.

Garlic is good for you no matter what, but the pills may be a help. Who knows.

" Welcome, Mand. I found out about the garlic connection here, and I just started on the pills a couple of days ago. I also started on probiotics after my first attack in May 2009. I have found the culprit in my pain to be soluable fiber. So go slow on the fiber. It's a hit and miss project as far as what to eat..---Mazyjo "

" I have had diverticulitis for over 10 years and all the doctor told me to do was avoid nuts, popcorn, seeds of any kind, and take a glass of Citrucel 3 times a day to get me regulated. I have re-occurring little stabbing pains in lower colon and it usually means I have to have a bowel movement in order to get rid of the pains. I am due another colonoscopy and am sure my colon is worse than before. I think the Citrucel is the best SAFE fiber you can take. It contains no junk like fiber capsules and it tastes good, like drinking a glass of orange juice. The problem I have with this diverticulitis is I either have diarrhea or am constipated and it's very embarrassing to be out in public and have to find a bathroom all the time. I will be glad to get the colonoscopy to find out if there is anything else I can do to quiet my colon down. "
