Hi everyone,
I'm new. I'm in my late 30's and have struggled with diver on and off for many years now. Interestingly enough, 8 years ago when I had my first attack (hospital stay for 1 week), no diver were found. It took until around 2006 that diverticula were noticed. Had several attacks this year and am currently on Abx. My CT only showed inflammation of the sigmoid colon. I have started Asacol 800mg twice daily to see if it helps. Surgery is being recommended. Anyone here that has had recurrent boughts of diver and taking Asacol or Lialdia now? If so, how long and has the medication suppressed any more attacks? Thanks so much. I've read several threads and my thoughts and prayers go out to those stuggling with this menacing condition. Dave
I had two attacks this past year, one in May and another in June. In July I went to a GI and he prescribed Asacol. I take two 400 mg tablets three times a day. I have not had a flare up since. I had a CT scan done in Late September which showed everything was normal. I stil have some discomfort in my gut, the GI also prescribed lots of fiber, and that sometimes gives me gas and discomfort. But the bottom line is I am doing ok. I go back to the GI the first week in December and that is when my prescription for Asacol will be expiring, so I am anxious to know if he will want me to stay on it or not. I hope this helps Jimmy

Thanks Jimmy. When was your initial attack with diverticulitis? Have you had other attacks in the prior years?
I'm glad your doing better. Dave

Dave,
I was diagnoised with diverticulosis three years ago, I passed blood in my bowel movements. I had a coloscopy and was told I had diverticulosis. I began to take fiber supplement daily, and this past May I had my first attack of diverticulitis. Then again an attack in June. Each time I did the Cipo/Flygal treatment. I am 68 years old, and my theory is this thing is heriditary. My grandmother, mother, aunt, a cousin all had intestinal problems, and now me, my oldest son and his daughter. I always ate good, foods with a lot of fiber, so I don't believe it was my diet. The Asacol seems to do a good job in keeping it at bay. I'll know when I go back to my GI in December if he wants me to keep taking it or see how things go without any medicine. Jimmy
