In July I didn't know what the problem was, I just knew that I wasn't having BM's like I normally do. When the pains began I went to see the GI doctor, who told me that the problem could be stress, my under-active thyroid, or my fibroids.

It wasn't until the CAT Scan last week that I was diagnosed with Diverticulitis (which I just found out my sister has). I feel miserable because I don't know what's safe to eat (recovering from a flare-up now from eating pizza rolls).

Can anyone tell me if it ever gets better? Can I ever expect relief from this? Does anyone have a "good list" of thing that can no longer eat? My doctor only mentioned nuts, seed, and popcorn.

Thanks in advance for helping out a newbie...

" I have been using the "Great Taste, No Pain" diet that I found online. You can download a free 4 day version to see if you like it. I actually felt better the first day. I've had one flare up since being on it but I think it was because of several factors: I was eating tomatoes and walnuts, and had been on a long car ride which seems to aggravate mine and stress due to my father having been diagnosed with cancer. It doesn't really list foods not to eat but what foods not to combine together. Although I love regular milk, I seem to being doing better since removing it from my diet (very acidic believe it or not). I figure I'll give my system several months to calm down and then slowly begin reintroducing milk, etc., if I've not had anymore flare ups. My specialist actually told me I could have popcorn, seeds, etc., as long as they didn't irritate my system. But I'm not taking any chances after the last episode which hospitalized me for 7 days. Hope you get better soon! Donna "

" Oh yeah, my doctor also highly recommended probiotics which I have been taking faithfully for a couple of weeks. We'll see how they do. "

" Almonds were the worst for me, so I stayed away from the standards, nuts, popcorn, seeds. But you really never know (except thru trial and error) what may trigger a ghastly attack. I highly recommend probiotics as well. I take one every night, but essential during antibiotics. Hope you are better soon. It is a painful illness "

" I also use the GTNP system and I've found that when I stick to it I feel totally fine. When I stray, I pay. (couldn't resist...it just sounded right). "

" There are recommendations of what not to eat like seeds, nuts, and popcorn. But there has never been absolute proof that these foods are the problem. I eat nuts, but chew them really well. I don't eat seeds or popcorn. Pizza causes me distress so I eat very little. Everyone is different on what might cause a flare up. The trick is to listen to your own body.

I eat small meals, stay away from red meat and eat mostly chicken and fish. No fried foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereal and bread. I don't eat a lot of starchy things like pasta, rice and potatoes. And I have to be careful with spicy foods. I used to love spicy food but it doesn't agree with me any more.

This disease has completely changed the way I eat. My foods are very simple. No more Julia Child or fancy cooking. Gets a little boring, but keeps me from flare ups. But I am still learning.

Cereal/oatmeal and fruit like blueberries, apple, pear
Soup or salad, or 1/2 turkey sandwich with soup/salad
Fish or chicken and lots of vegetables
Lots of water "
