Actually, almost 14 months after my hospital stay for my first (and hope only) bout of diverticulitis at age 40. It took me about 6 months for the intestines to get back to normal and it took a YEAR for my hairy tongue problem caused by the antibiotics to go away.
I haven't had any flares or relapses and after SLOWLY increasing my fiber, I'm up to 25-30 grams a day now. My GI doctor said he knows I'm not kidding about increased fiber because my cholesterol has gone down 40 points! So there's hope to going back to normal! Posted on 09/08/09, 09:09 am |

Glad your doing well Sbtier,
The fiber is a good thing for us even if if does not stop attacks. There is a big plus side and little down side for those that do not suffer pain from taking it. It probably does stop the fomation of new diveticula in the colon. Since you have a new section in the high stress area, I would be failthful to the fiber. People that suffer from taking fiber, I wonder it is wrong to try. Something good sould not hurt so much. Best Wishes, John

sbtier - do you mind if I ask a question about your hospital stay? Did you have any type of surgery or did they do IV antibiotics or what? I'm just curious because I was in the hospital the last week of July and I had an abcess rupture (this was my diagnosis as best I can tell from the limited info I was able to drag from my doctors). They went in laproscopically (I was initially mis-diagnosed with appendicitis) and cleaned up the infection and removed some adhesions. I just hope to be as lucky as you have been. I had one less severe episode in late May which was treated with IVs in the doctor's office and did not have to be admitted to the hospital.
Hope you continue to do well.

I actually had an unusual course for someone with diverticulitis. I went to the hospital with upper abdominal pain and swelling. They admitted me because my white blood count was so high. It was originally thought I had gall bladder trouble. I had NO pain in the lower abdomen (they kept poking me in the lower left and saying 'are you SURE that doesn't hurt'. I had tests to rule out gallbladder because I do have stones and I had an endoscopy to rule out stomach problems. It wasn't until day 3 they did a scan of the lower ab that the scan showed diverticulitis (three diverticuli in the lower left, infected but still didn't hurt). I spent 1 day on IV antibiotics in the hospital then went home on day 4 with oral antibiotics.

I had to comment. When I saw mention of "hairy tongue problem" I cracked up. That was HILARIOUS! I can say that because I I had it for a while. And that's precisely how I would describe it.

Hairy tongue is the real name! Also called Black Hairy Tongue, even though it can be several colors. Mine is actually green!
Good job on the fiber, sbtier. Here's to your continued good health.

Yes, it is really called 'hairy tongue'. Mine was green for awhile. But the worst was when it was BROWN for awhile, that's really strange.

hairy shmairy, I am not impressed with mine, although the tissues arent really long, they are bright orange.. when I first saw it, it looked like I have been drinking orange koolaid.. and I hadnt... but I had been on a long treatment of Minocycline... something I had never taken, and I rarely take antibiotics at all, maybe once in ten years... for a very bad case of strep throat... I have an odd immune system, when something goes awry, it doesnt it full force, no playing around and leading up to things... so it worries me when things like this happen, it started when I got a variety of rashes on my body during a heat wave...some were treatable with creams. but one i was given this Antibiotic.. something I plan to stay away from in the fulture... ..I would like to know a littel more about the hair tongue issue... I knew it was a yeast problem, and my Dr said a bacterial infection... I later learned it is both.. my lymph nodes were all swollen in my neck and around my ears... I itched so bad I had to take antihistamines around the clock for over a week, I quit eating sugar and all yeast products.. it did help for a while, but since the last couple weeks, I have been to 2 funerals, and some other group functions for which there were sweets, and I caved cause I was so tired and hungry, I told myself tomorrow, I will start again... mostly I am doing well, but it has been 2 months with this tongue colored... and I have good oral hygeine habits.. brushing twice a day, brushing my tongue, and flossing, so when the articles I read said it was from poor oral hygeine I wasnt impressed.
Do you know more than this.. what did you do to treat it... I have been also trying to avoid mint tooth paste...and I dont drink coffee, usually green tea or a herbal tea, and soya milk. I dont understand what caused it, I first thought it was an allergy to plums... it was summer and I had eaten a lot of fruit, mostly plums cause they were in season. I have started scraping my tongue now, and using antiseptic sprays to help kill off any bacteria, and I dont have bad breath.. something that was a common side effect of this..... please tell me you know something to do with this... or a web site that will help. I have followed all the directions from both my Dr and a holistic pharmacyst.... is it just a wait it out senario??????? Thanks for listening to me rant.... Rachel..

My doc prescribed a Nystatin swish-n-swallow formula. I took if for weeks and it did nothing. I stopped using it.
Here's what I did. Your mileage may vary. I started taking acidopholus tablets to balance yeast. I stopped using regular toothpaste. Instead, I first brush my tongue, then use a little baking soda on my teeth. I follow with a rinse of the Jason brand Healthy Mouth rinse. It is a natural antiseptic rinse with tea tree oil and other essential oils in it. A friend who is a dentist recommended it. I rinse with the Healthy Mouth after every meal, holding it in my mouth as long as I can stand before spitting it out. I started seeing effects in about 5 days. My tongue has been turning pink again, starting with the tip and working its way back. Now there's only one little patch left at the back of my tongue. Should be back to normal soon!

to Oh me Oh mya.......Thanks for the info about the oral rinse, and acidophilous, I do use that and another probiotic combo, and brush and scrape my tongue... I also bought a different toothpaste ...natural "Toms"... but I havent resorted to teatree yet, I do have lots of it so I will get at that asap... and maybe my tongue will also stop feeling so burnt. my pharmacyst told me to also increase my Omega 3's, not sure of the purpose for that, but I have noticed a difference in my Gastric behaviour, and my breathing is much freer. I was just hoping that I wasnt in for a really long treatment course. I appreciate your advice. Bless you. Rachel
