Anyone else out there that is under the age of 40 and has had diverticulitis? I am a 34 year old male and have had 2 episodes of diverticulitis. The first one was when I was 30 and it ended up with me having surgery to remove part of my colon. I am currently fighting this again and slowly going down the same path. All of the info I have read states how rare this disease is in people under 50 and once one surgery is performed, the chances are under 20% of re-accurance. Why can't I beat this types of odds when I play the lottery?

" Hi,

I'm 36 and have had 4 attacks in the last 18 months.

I'm controlling it with diet and I'm happy to say that I actually prevented an attack in early June by going on a no-fiber diet for a week as soon as I started feeling pain.

I've had a lot of success controlling this with "nutrition therapy". I'm working with a nutritionist and I've learned a ton about food. I'd be happy to share what I've learned with anyone who's interested.

Apparently there are more and more cases of young people getting this. I had a consult with a surgeon and his first words to me were "Aren't you a little young to be talking to me?" My son who is 3 is having some abdominal issues and I'm terrified that a little kid could get this!! I'm pushing fiber and fluids on him like you wouldn't believe.

" Hi Goldtru,

I am very interested in your nutrition therapy. I am interested in the source of the information too. How does your nutritionist find answers to diet questions related to diverticulis. I have only found fuzzy information about food related to DD. There are lots of opinions. I was sure about some foods before, but now I am unsure about those foods today.

The biggest food related dogma presented as science for DD prevention by the medical community is eating lots of fiber helps prevent attacks. It did not for me. There are not real hard studies that prove that fiber helps. This disease and the acute attacks may not be food related at all. It could be antibiotic damage, NSAID damage, viral damage, a species of baterial (like stomach ulcers - h-pylori), or just genetic.

I am glad you are doing well. I hope you do have the answers for all of us.

Peace,

John "

" Hi I am a 37 year old female who is now going through my 3 rd bout of divirticulitis. I definately know how you feel. I had a micro bowl perforation with my first bout last year but I was able to be treated with a few days in the hospital and resting my colan as well as 2 more rounds of antibiotics at home. I have had to take double rounds of antibiotics each time. even this time I am currently on cipro and flagyl. My second round. My doctor did tell me on my last visit that in some cases it does not go away and surgery will need to be done. I hope that you do beat this and do not have to have surgery again. I am hoping and praying for the same. I am eating a soft bland diet, lots and lots of fluids, as well as stool softners.

I do wish you all the best..... "

" I had my first attack at 39 and it happened as a trip to the ER being told I perforated my bowel and had emergency surgery. Received a Colostomy. I had the colostomy for 3 months and then went back under the knife and had the colostomy reversed. I was doing great after surgery and then this last monday I ate an apple and got some bloating and alittle gut pain nothing major and I wasn't what caused the pain. Ate another apple later and discovered the apple caused the pain and bloating and I proceeding to be very ill for the rest of the week. Dr. put me on antibiotics and I am feeling better but this attack scared me since the first one sent me under the knife. Good luck all of you we are just anomolies having this at such a young age.
