I am no expert on the subject but if you have a juicer carrot juice is used by natural healers to help the bowels to function properly. It is best on an empty stomach first thing in the morning or between meals. Carrot juice is supposed to regulate either crisis of evacuation. I have at times, used a combination apple juice and carrot juice. The worst thing about this ailment is the silence we receive from doctors - just keep your normal routine - well if the normal routine helped make this worse what good is that? I did not mean to complain. One set of discussions and a website suggested probiotics as a balancer for this type of situation. You might want to browse some of the discussions to see what others have done. Hope this helps some

Lady Helen had good advice, always go back through and read the posts from others. My last attack and surgery was in July. Since then, I have been having some luck combining different things (knock on wood): I loosely adhere to the Great Taste, No Pain food combining plan I ordered on line (best $50 bucks I ever spent), odorless garlic pills and probiotics. I also try to keep to a minimum acidic foods such as milk, alcohol and I never eat seeds or nuts. I was tickled pink when I found this support group and they have a wealth of information to offer that oddly, our doctors seem to lack..

Is the pain when passing stools occuring every day, even when you are infection free?
I have had very painful eliminations when I am recovering from an attack of diverticulitis, up to two weeks after an infection. If the pain is constant when you are infection free, you might want to try a low residue diet with a high water intake, until the pain stops.

I've noticed when I forget to drink lots of water every day, there is definitely a difference and not for the good. My food list has grown. I cook up fresh peeled carrols, cut into bit size pieces. I don't cook them mushy, just enough to get rid of the crunch and take those to work to much on, P&B sandwhiches (clear jelly, no seeds or pulp), tuna and crackers and just about anything that goes down easily that I don't have to chew alot. I stay from a lot of spices and even pepper now. I do cheat at times and get tired of this on again off again diet, but at least I'm in control now. I go back on my liquid diet this week to prepare for my colonoscopy but I pretty much have that part down pact now. I guess you can call this an experimental desease, there is no food list that works for everyone. Whatever you figure out, drink plenty of water/liquids especially when eating and right afterwards, that has worked best for me. This site has helped so so much and I also am very grateful I found it. Just read a lot of the posts and you can find answers to just about all of your questions if not all of them. I spend more time reading in here than posting. It really is a great place to be been you're hurting.

This is all terrific advise, but I hope nobody is expecting a response as the first posting and 2 replies were dated 2009.

Hi Gerdy
I'm inbetween runs to the bathroom right now ...sorry to put it that way...I'm having a bad flare up right now...went to the ER three nights ago...they gave me anit and pain meds. I can't keep the pain meds down nor any food...was on the toliet and thought I was going to die and also had a cold sweat because the pain was so bad when I passed the stool. I called the advice nurse and she said if I can't keep the meds down to return to the ER. I'm praying I don't have to but if so I'll be right back in the hospital. YES!!!! my dear I feel your pain over and over again and I will keep you and ALL of us who suffer with this horrible thing in my prayers each and every night. GOD BLESS YOU ALL
