Post Surgery Issue

Hi guys, I had colon resection surgery (4 hour surgery, my entire sigmoid colon removed) on 8/10/09 after 10 years of divi attacks.

I have felt pretty good, but whenever I start to eat healthy, I have to RUN to the bathroom. Where I think I am not going to make it. This is not cool at work.

This morning I had pineapple for breakfast and then sauteed Bok Choy for lunch. Both had an awful effect.

The first week after the surgery, you don't eat at all, and then simple starches, pasta and mashed potatoes for about a month. My surgeon told me that I could start eating normally and to start eating a lot of fiber so that I do not have this situation again, but every time I try to eat fruits and vegetables, it goes straight thru me.

Is anyone else having this issue? Thanks!

" Hi SuzyP, I had the same surgery in July and am eating a regular diet. Bowels are good. Just experiencing extra gas! And, after 3 months I have my energy and my brain back! "

" Hi Spunkie, Thanks for answering. I am starting to feel like myself energetically as well. I hope the extra gas thing lets up soon!!! I love your chow btw!!! I had a beautiful black girl chow, but she went to doggy heaven a couple of years ago. "

" hi, i only had about 10 inches removed in march but i cannot eat much fiber of any kind. it doesn't go right through but i can only eat it every other day or so, otherwise i get symptoms. my stomach feels like i ate glass and if i persist it worsens to include bloodly symptoms. so, i eat a lot of complex carbs and go light on the fiber - it's difficult to avoid though, i swear they'll be putting it in milk soon!

i never had the extra gas, possibly because i didn't lose as much. but i was very fatigued for a few months, i'm also a vegetarian so that may have contributed to my fatigue.

i'm now following a 'hit-and-miss' diet - and keeping track of what works and what doesn't. i did it when i had an ulcer and when i developed migraines and it works because it provides a clear picture of what i need to avoid. the 'hits' being things that make me ill and the 'misses' things that don't cause symptoms =)

and now that i can eat brocccoli (but not much lettuce!) my dog thinks she's in doggy heaven - she's convinced it's a rare doggy treat, rofl "

" Thanks for letting me know about your experience. Funny we are all having such different experiences from the same surgery. "

" everyone's different - i have migraines too. i can eat chocolate and nuts, major triggers for most but not me - unless i eat them together. i see it at work too, some people with depression eat almost non-stop while others can't eat. but most people with the same condition/illness will exhibit similar signs and symptoms.

i'm glad we can compare notes though, makes those who have odd symptoms/outcomes feel less alone and can get people (like me!) to pay more attention. my 2nd attack, the one with the perforation, was so minimal i wasn't going to go to the er, my supervisor who is an rn insisted, oops. good thing! =) "
