Advice:
what to ask the surgeon?

I have a surgical consult today and need to know what all to ask.

I first had diverticulitis about 15+ years ago. confirmed with colonoscopy afterwards.
I only had a bout approx once a year or two until last year.
I have had at least 6 episodes needing antibiotics in the last year.
FP doctor and GI Dr. both suggest considering surgery as option to stop recurrences.
Most episodes are on left side but repeat colonoscopy last year identifies diverticuli on the right side as well.

Is there a site with info on what all to cover in a discussion with a surgeon?
Thanks.

" Hi, I don't know of any sites off hand. My surgeon explained the surgery to me. She told me the length of time in hospital varies. I was in 9 days longer than usual. It took awhile for my bowels to return. Are they considering a laporoscopic assist or an open surgery? Ask what you will have for post - op pain. I found that the Dilaudid pump worked a lot better than Morphine. I could not tolerate an epidural post op as I have stenosis and herniated discs. Ask if you will have an NG tube. I had one for 6 days. Also, a foley catheter, and a drain. Ask about recovery at home. I was told not to drive for at least 3 weeks until I see surgeon again. I can walk and do light activities. You may need something for pain when you return home. Also ask, if surgeon looked at your CT films. Mine said my colon was terribly narrowed thus, major reason for surgery. Hope this helps. take care, Mary Anne "
