Hello everyone I have been on a liquid/soft diet since friday. I have been only eating some very thin cream of wheat, jello, and a few mashed potatoes and of course drinking lemon water, orange gatorade, and some lemonade. I was wandering how long I should stay on this diet before feeling better ? I am trying to avoid a full blown attack. I am looking for work due to loosing my job early in the year due to my 2nd attack. I tried working from home making crafts to sell but just no market for the stuff I make in my area so now I am looking for work again, and as we all know that is not easy in the job market today. As a result of loosing my job I no longer have health insurance that is another reason I want to nip this in the bud if at all possible. I have a hot spot that hurts and is sore from time to time but when getting an attack it gets worse and then the pain spreads over a larger area of my abdomen over my left hip and into my back. I also am wandering if the meds some of you mentioned in other discussions may help me ? because I just got over my 3rd attack about 3 or 4 weeks ago, and now another starting but in my last x-rays my doc said I still had swelling in my colon but no divirticulitis. Is the medication for swelling ? also is cream of wheat and mashed potatoes ok when on a soft/liquid diet ? I am so confused and worried. My doc mentioned possible surgery if it does not clear and right now I have no insurance as I mentioned before so any advice anyone can give me I would greatly appreciate it ! and if I could ask those who don't mind I could use a few prayers as I am really having a hard time........

Hi MnM525,
A clear liquid diet is usually only required for two days in order for your body to recover, or it declines and you head to the ER for antibiotics. Most people that are under atttack require medical intervention to save their lives. There is the smoldering type of attacks, but they are more rare. If you are in the smoldering group, you need meds to stop the smoldering and possibly surgery. Your WBC and temperature should be monitored. You probably should have your C-reactive protien checked and your BUN. I know that is not good news to you seeing you have no medical insurance, but you must get healthy in order to carry on. I would think lemmon juice is just about the worst thing you can take. The number one drink that is reported by sufferers that preceded their attack is V8 juice. I would guess the high citic acid could be the cause. I do not know, but I am surprised anyone ever suggested it. Potatoes are a medium fiber food. I would avoid them. The best food is animal food. Chicken, eggs, etc have zero fiber and many find them comforting. White bread, white rice, and cream of wheat are good. I have no medical training. I am just a sufferer like you. I wish I had better info for you, John

I am so sorry for you. between the economy and your health - you are really getting it. Maybe, a prescription for Cipro would help you. Also. I was told that the heating pad is good for the spasms and pain. God Bless and take care. Mary Anne
