I had such pressure and pain last evening that I wound up calling surgeon at 10pm. Unable to go to BR - just mucous - lots of it. I am taking about 400 mg Colace plus Miralax twice a day. I even tried a Duculox suppository. This pain was really severe. My husband went to all night drugstore and picked up Cipro. (again)! I have been on this basically since end of April. Am on liguids today - pain has lessened , but still there. To top it off, I have oral thrush. Colonoscopy and surgery are scheduled for 29th of July. I just can't take this anymore. I have spinal issues and was supposed to have neck fusion done in April. This was postponed till bowel resection is done. My walking and arms are getting weaker. I need a cane as it is. But, a lot of activity starts the diverticulitis up and I have to rest in bed. I just want to cry. Thanks for listening.

I am here with you I am so sick of this as well it is like a never ending cycle at times. I start to think I am getting a little better then I get up to start to do a few things and then it gets worse and I am right back down. I get sick of just laying all the time and that causes my back and neck to hurt more ( they were injured in a car accident a few years ago). I feel like I am doomed if I do and doomed if I don't. you feel like you are making a choice as to what pain you can take the most that day.......My Dr. mentioned surgery during my visit on wednesday..... I go back on 07/08/09 and if no improvement he is going to take another course of action..... hoping for the best for all of us....... it is good that we have this group and can give one another support....... I do hope you get well soooon and are able to finally have some peace from this.

Thanks so much. I am doing better on the Cipro again. I guess, I will just have to take it till I have the surgery. I wish I knew some success stories from people who had surgery. I go back to surgeon on the 7th.
I hope you improve, too. I think when things get to be too much - prayer really helps. Good luck with your appointment on the 8th and have a nice holiday. Thanks so much again. Take care, Mary Anne

Hey, Ozzieandharriet,
You wanted to hear a success story. I think you probably haven't because by the time we have surgery and get better, we don't need a support site anymore. I suffered through a bout of diver that wouldn't go away from Nov-Feb '09. Had surgery in early February, and I feel just great! The recovery took a few weeks, but other than some odd bowel habits, I'm fine. And so happy to be off antibiotics, rid of the thrush, the yeast infections, the pain. One silver lining--I lost 20 lb being sick, and have only gained 10 back! I just have to keep going to the gym!

Hi ozzie and harriet -- I am also a success story. I had a bout of diverticulitis that lasted from December to April of this year. I did four seperate rounds of antibiotics and just couldn't get the diverticulitis to clear. Had the surgery at the end of April. It was a laproscopic resection, they took about 12 inches. I am about two months post-op and I feel great. It is such a relief not to have that daily struggle with smoldering diverticulitis. I agree with jenny, the reason you aren't hearing more success stories is, once we have recovered, we don't frequent this site as much. best of luck -- Cindy

The risk of diverticulitis returning after resection is 16 percent chance over 15 years.
http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/a... That is a low percentage if you are having constant attacks with 100 percent chance of another attack. That means that 84 percent of people never get another attack. That is very good! Eighty percent of people that get one attack never get another. Surgery makes no sense for them. Medical, rather than surgical, prevention for diverticulitis is still being tested (Mesalazine). It is promising, but I do not know the percent "cures". We need better tools to figure out which people need surgery early and which people are better off left alone. We should all be in studies to help our children - surgical or medical studies. They will likely be the next generation of DD sufferers. Even I faded away from this site when I started feeling better. It is rare for a person to hang around here feeling good. Our view is slanted towards the worsed cases. I wish there were better answers.

hello - i'm a success story - so far...had the surgery in early dec. and have been pain free and symptom free for the last 6 months. i had one attack in 2000 and then 3-4 between 2007 and 2008. b/c i also had kidney failure with each of the last bouts, i had to opt for the surgery. it was certainly a major one but the drugs make it bearable and your memory obliterates most of the worst stuff. i, too, had laperopscopic surgery and the scar is virtually gone. you have much to look forward to after the surgery. best of luck to you.

Thanks so much. I am so glad to hear from all of you. I hope I can have the laporoscopy. I am scared ,too, because I haven't had a colonoscopy yet - I am having it the day before surgery. I just want so much to get better. I quit smoking 3 months ago and lost weight. There is some good out of this. Thanks again - it is so encouraging to know that this has an end.
