Advice:
my doctor says diverticulitis, but ...

My problem started six months ago with what I thought was a bad stomach virus. I was vomiting, had diarrhea, was chilled, had worse than usual lower back pain, and was badly nauseated. After five days, I finally began to feel better, but I have had recurring symptoms for the last six months, most commonly nausea and fatigue. About six weeks ago, I began to have pain in my lower left abdomen, almost my groin, during a bowel movement. My PCP ordered blood work, a stool sample, and an ultrasound of my ultrasound. Everything came up fine. After seeing my PCP several times, I was referred to a gastroenterologist. He diagnosed me with diverticulitis and gave me Flagyl. He wanted to give me Cipro, but I'm allergic to it. He told me to finish the antibiotic and come back in three weeks for a colonoscopy. That was two weeks ago. I called today to tell them that I still feel terrible, and his nurse said that he wanted to see the results of the colonoscopy before further treatment. I failed to ask if I could move up the date of the test.

For the last six weeks, I have felt terrible. I have days where all I want to do is sleep, and I have lost about 10 pounds. I battle nausea and diarrhea almost daily, and the pain in my lower left abdomen is aggravating but not severe. I am also frequently chilled. I guess what I want to know is if anyone else has had these problems with this disease. I am so tired of feeling bad, and I'm beginning to think that I will never feel well again.

" Well, not exactly. We all know our own symptoms, but there are many here that have symptoms I do no have.

Feeling generally crappy - have had that! Clears 3 - 5 days into antibiotics.
Fever - yeap!
Pain in groin - yeap! Severe pain gone in five days on antibiotics

Vomiting and diarrhea - no.
Nausea - only when on the antibiotics.

Many have a bloated feeling I never get so you have a enough problems to think you are in the right place here. There are side effects from the antibiotics you might be experiencing. You may have a smoldering form of the disease that may be a sign of bad things to come.

I have no medical training. I mostly know what I know from my own disease.

Go to a large hospital ER. Having a fever and a pain in your side can be really bad. You should know your white blood count daily.

I hope you get fixed soon,

John "

" Flagyl side effects:

http://www.rxlist.com/flagyl-drug.htm

Two serious adverse reactions reported in patients treated with Flagyl (metronidazole) have been convulsive seizures and peripheral neuropathy, the latter characterized mainly by numbness or paresthesia of an extremity. Since persistent peripheral neuropathy has been reported in some patients receiving prolonged administration of Flagyl, patients should be specifically warned about these reactions and should be told to stop the drug and report immediately to their physicians if any neu-rologic symptoms occur.

The most common adverse reactions reported have been referable to the gastrointestinal tract, particularly nausea reported by about 12% of patients, sometimes accompanied by headache, anorexia, and occasionally vomiting; diarrhea; epi-gastric distress; and abdominal cramping. Constipation has also been reported.

The following reactions have also been reported during treatment with Flagyl (metronidazole):

Mouth: A sharp, unpleasant metallic taste is not unusual. Furry tongue, glossitis, and sto-matitis have occurred; these may be associated with a sudden overgrowth of Candida which may occur during therapy.

Hematopoietic: Reversible neutropenia (leuko-penia); rarely, reversible thrombocytopenia.

Cardiovascular: Flattening of the T-wave may be seen in electrocardiographic tracings.

Central Nervous System: Convulsive seizures, peripheral neuropathy, dizziness, vertigo, incoordination, ataxia, confusion, irritability, depression, weakness, and insomnia.

Hypersensitivity: Urticaria, erythematous rash, flushing, nasal congestion, dryness of the mouth (or vagina or vulva), and fever.

Renal: Dysuria, cystitis, polyuria, incontinence, and a sense of pelvic pressure. Instances of darkened urine have been reported by approximately one patient in 100,000. Although the pigment which is probably responsible for this phenomenon has not been positively identified, it is almost certainly a metabolite of metronidazole and seems to have no clinical significance.

Other: Proliferation of Candida in the vagina, dyspareunia, decrease of libido, proctitis, and fleeting joint pains sometimes resembling &ldquoserum sickness.” If patients receiving Flagyl drink alcoholic beverages, they may experience abdominal distress, nausea, vomiting, flushing, or headache. A modification of the taste of alcoholic beverages has also been reported. Rare cases of pan-creatitis, which generally abated on withdrawal of the drug, have been reported. "

" Hi, i had all of your symptoms. I ignored it somewhat, as i thought i had gastroentoritis....i felt sort of flu like symptoms and pain, and going to the toilet alot.....i also noticed blood.
I don't want to scare you, but it turned out i had an absess that burst and also my colon had perfortated. I also had piritonitus and a raging UTI. I had stomach/bowel problems for years and had never heard of divertuculitis until i ended up in hospital.
When i finally went to hospital i couldn't walk for the pain in my stomach. If things get really bad, get someone to take you to the hospital. Within a short time blood tests showed there was something wrong.
Although the hospital diagnosed diverticulis, i also have immune disorders which i have more recently read can also cause perforation of the colon. Personally i feel this is what caused mine. I hope you get sorted out soon and manage to get answers, treatment and relief.
Wishing you all the best x "

" Have you had a CT Scan? If you go to Emergency Room, they will probably do one. They can tell a lot with that and it is not invasive, so you can have it done while your bowel is inflamed. Good luck, Mary Anne "

" Have you had a CAT scan? I've had multiple doctors tell the danger of perf is extremely high when a colonoscopy is performed with active diverticulitis. I would absolutely INSIST that a CAT scan with contrast be performed before a colonoscopy. Let's face it, it's your life you are dealing with. "

" yes I have and or have had all of these symptoms and they are terrible !. My Dr. always does x-rays inwhich will show if there is air in the abdomen as well as the swolen colon. I would definately request and x-ray as well as a CT scan. that is what found the perforation that I had last year !. I would definately go to the ER and there they will most likely do both sets of tests. I do wish you all the best I totally understand what you are going through as I am battling my 3rd attack right now and I am on my 2nd round of antibiotics.
Hope you are well soon.... "

" Thanks for all of the replies. I have not had a CAT scan yet. After taking Flagyl for a week, I developed thrush. I called the doctor's office this past Monday to tell them that I was still nauseated and hurting and asked for a different antibiotic. The nurse told me that the doctor wanted to do the procedure before prescribing anything else. I assume that is because of the thrush. I did have blood work done in June, and it came back fine. I'm so tired of feeling bad, but I'm actually more concerned that the tests will show nothing. Before seeing the gastro, I had several tests done, including blood, stool, and gallbladder scans. All of those came back fine. I am very frustrated. "
