Advice:
some pain after completing meds

I have just completed a ten day course of cipro and flagyl, and I still have a twinge of pain once and a while in my gut. Is that normal? Can I expect some discomfort for several days after completing the meds? Seems like I was actually better about two days on meds, than now. I think the meds make me feel bad. How long before they get out of the system?

" the flagyl is the culprit, in my opinion. in my case, the cure was almost as bad as the cause. it seemed to make my stomach/intestines extremely sensitive. i took some prilosec and that helped a lot - maybe it'll work for you. after taking the prilosec for 3-4 days, i felt much better. hope you're on the mend soon. " Could be your diet...go easy. Resting the bowel is just as important as the antibiotics. If eating gives you pain, back off. Stay on soft/bland as long as you need to and drink lots of water. "

" I've had intermittent pain since late April. The surgeon said my CT scans show that my bowel is swollen inside and it is difficult for the stool to pass through. I am having surgery in a couple of weeks. I have had 3 courses of antibiotics since late April. When do you go back to your doctor? "

" That's great - the doctor told me also that the inflammation takes a lot longer to clear up than the acute infection. I am sure the doctor will be able to give you advice. A lot of people have gotten relief from Asacol. It is an anti inflammatory for the bowel. You could ask your doctor about it. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me, but my surgeon wanted me to try it. Take care, Mary Anne "

" Hi Mary Anne, I can't believe your surgeon wanted you to try Asacol. Many of us try to get it from our Drs and they refuse. That happened to me.. Yes, we all agree, Flagyl makes you feel like crap! When I am on the Flagyl/Cipro I can't wait til the 10th day as I know I'll feel better just being off the meds. I had cramps and discomfort for some time after the actual episode. I think it wasn't totally cleared up. And the meds can make you very tired. "

" Mary Anne, Where do they think your problem diverticuli is located? Mine is at the colorectal sigmoid junction - right in the middle. "

" Hi Spunkie,
She said the Ct scans showed it in the Sigmoid Colon. She said the scans showed thickening of the wall. The only thing that scares me is that she said colon cancer can also present this way on CT scan. She said that they will know for sure after colonoscopy that the gastro will do the day before surgery. Then, I will be admitted to hospital after colonoscopy and have surgery the next day. I should have had colonoscopy earlier. I am 56. But, I have been putting everything else off due my spinal issues. I will be so glad when this is over. I hope we both can have it done with laporoscopic procedure. She said, she wanted to try the Asacol after last hospitalization, to see if it helped with inflammation. Unfortunately, it didn't work with me. Hope you have a relaxing 4th. take care, Mary Anne "

" Hello, I have had 3 bouts of the divirticulitis since november of last year and the first one was with a micro bowl perforation which closed on its own with antibiotics. I am on cipro and flagyl right now for my 3rd episode. I did have pain after the meds for a little while but I did find that using the stool softners and limiting the amount of meat that I eat as well as keeping with the soft diet as much as possible did help.. I am on the soft/bland diet now with stool softners as well. maybe this will help you. and lots and lots of fluids. I wish you the best and hope you do not have any more episodes of the divriticulitis. "
