Just wondering if anyone here has had an Open Sigmoid Colectomy with Ostomy? Seems like alot have been lucky enough to have the laproscopic surgery, but my 1st attack of diverticulitis resulted in a perforated colon. Now I'm dealing with an ostomy bag for the next 5 months when then I hopefully will have a colon resection.

" Hi there ! I am so sorry you had to deal with perforation and now with a colostomy. :) How is that part going ?

I had an open sigmoid resection almost exactly 8 weeks ago. The people here were kind enough to let me post on this board because mine was done because of endometriosis that had gone through my colon wall and caused an obstruction. So...different reason, but same surgery.

I was in the hospital 6 days. It is not a fun surgery.Mine was complicated by some internal bleeding and blood in my urine (they had to put stents in my ureters in order to identify my ureters and keep from cutting them) so yours should hopefully be a bit smoother.

Take a small/medium pillow with you to the hospital to brace your stomach so you can cough and deep breathe. Walk, walk, walk multiple times a day. Drink plenty of water. Have someone who can be with you 24/7 at least the first few days after your surgery.

The whole first week I was home, I basically did nothing except walk, eat and rest. I have a jr. high aged daughter so my mom came here to help transport her to school because I was not allowed to drive and my husband needed to get back to work. She also cooked and cleaned because I was not allowed.

Also remember that your insides are still healing even long after your outside stitches and pain are healed. Take it easy, take it slow..but yet don't just sit around. The biggest thing for me in the weeks following surgery was the fatigue...I just got so easily tired.

Feel free to ask other questions ! "

" Hello NPmommy! Did you have to have a colostomy? I'm having a hard time dealing with mine & now I think a hernia has popped up around the stoma site. So upsetting..... "
