Hi all, I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago when I went to hospital with a perforated bowel. Luckily I avoided surgery because the 'mass' was contained and iv antibiotics worked well. My problem is all the conflicting diet suggestions I have been reading online. Some sites say avoid all nuts, seeds and whole grains... others say they are not only fine, but necessary as fibre in our diet. I would prefer to ask advice from people who live with this disease, so please can anyone help with this?
Example of my problem: this evening we went to Subway where I thought I would order the turky sub which looked quite healthy. First problem.. should I have had the wholegrain bread? I settled for oatbran because I didn't know. Second problem: was I allowed to have cucumber and tomato? they contain small seeds.. would they get stuck in my 'pockets'? Any advice would be sincerely appreciated, and I am looking forward to getting to know you all :) Posted on 12/14/11, 04:40 am |

I am finding that some people can handle food that others cannot. I was told nothing with seeds, nuts, skin, no brocolli, corn, whole grains, wheat, lay off on anything with fiber till the flare goes away. He advised these things do get stuck in the "pockets". Also fresh fruit/veggies were a no no - have to have canned.
I knew better than to have a handful of popcorn :) and ended up in the hospital. I have been eating a "soft diet" since Sept - mashed potatoes, white rice, eggs, white pasta.(vitamins). Until I have a colon test next month, am really leary about doing any kind of trial and error eating Not only is the internet full of conflicting things you can eat, doctors do not seem to have any kind of information either I did ask for a list of what I can eat, was told they didnt have any, but was handed a pamphlet of a fiber diet and told told to "not eat" anything that was on there. Dr Oz did a program on diverticulitis -you can view it on the web. He was saying nuts, etc is ok. He also has actual colon photos where you can see what the pockets look like. After viewing that program, its a wonder that I even eat anything at all. At the end of the day I guess its all down to what you can tolerate - for me that isn't much :(

I was told I could eat soft fleshy seeds (after I was better). Seeds that were in Zucchini and Cucumbers. They said no to tomato seeds, but I do eat them and have no problem with them. I just don't eat sundried tomatoes. They are really harder. I was also told the only nuts I could have were peanut butter. I occasionally eat nuts. They may be in chicken salad or some cakes. I find if I chew them completely I don't have a problem. What I completely stay away from is popcorn or any kind of corn. You will soon find what works for you. And yeah, I have been to places where I had to decide on the bread. I try to stay away from bread with hard pieces in them. At home I eat a 100% whole wheat bread that has no hard pieces but it has the fiber. One time I totally forgot and was eating poppy seed rolls. By my third one I realized what I was doing. But....nothing bad happened.

I have done ok with cucumbers, tomatoes, and even fresh veggies. I really miss my sunflower seeds, pistachios, cashews and almonds. I was even leary of sesame seeds and poppy seeds, but I have had no problems with that. I love popcorn but am scared to death to even try it. I drink tons of water with everything I eat - someone told me (logically speaking) that the water helps to fill the "pockets" and/or push out anything that could be stuck. It just depends on the person though, and I agree with Rose - definitely keep a Food Journal - that has made a huge difference in my food choices!
