Keeping a food journal

For one week...keep a food journal of everything you eat. Be honest! Day after day, you will see on paper what you are putting into your body and will have a much clearer picture of what foods are causing you problems. There is a great article on www.thebuzzonlife.com about keeping a food diary. "The simple act of writing down what and how much we eat can have a profound effect on the way we eat. " Try it! Happy 4th.

" Hi!

I keep an online food journal actually. I've been doing it consistently for the past three months, but I have done it in the past on paper as well. It makes me get obsessed with every little calorie, and I find my calorie intake getting lower and lower. Nothing's ever "good enough". My dietitian recommended that I stop the food journaling because of this.

" I AGREE AND I GO THE EXTRA MILE BY PUTTING HOW MANY CALS. I MEASURE MY FOOD AND SEE WHAT AN ACTUAL SERVING IS, THEN ENETER INTO SPARKPEOPLE.COM AND SEE HOW MANY CALS AT THE END OF THE DAY..ITS UGLY SOMETIMES BUT THAT HELPS ME CONTROL THE NEXT DAY BETTER "

" I use "Lose It" -- a free app for the iphone/ipod touch. I LOVE it -- it calculates calories for the day (based on current weight and weight loss goals) and also has calories in many, many foods. You can calculate your own recipes, or just enter a "new" food if you know the calorie count. It also lets me input exercise, and it subtracts the calories burned. Gives me a status bar in green (or red...if I go over) and keeps track over time. I think the awareness (and the realization that I've got to put it in my journal) really has helped me with my weight loss goals. (For me, it helps that it's on my ipod -- I always have it with me, I LOVE to play with that thing, and it just looks like I'm exploring my tunes when I'm entering the data in public! I also have some restaurant nutrition lists and other tools on it.) "

" The iPhone tip is a good one, but, I am a low tech gal, don't like being tethered to something electronic. I like my little manual daily food diary that I carry with me at all times.

Having said that, if I had an iPhone I would love playing with it as well! "
