Restaraunts that have lied about their menu...

So I was watching the news last night, and they did this story where these women went to a few restaraunts and ordered things off their "weight management" menus.
I think the places they went were: -Taco Bell (Fresca Tacos) -Cheese Cake Factory (Weight management salads) -Chilis (Guilt-less menu) -Applebee's (Weight Watchers Menu) -Wendys (I think....their healthy grilled chicken stuff or something) And anyways....they took these foods back to a lab and tested them for their calories and fat content. And every single one of those foods came back with almost twice the amount of calories and sometimes 3 times the amount of fat content that they stated was actually in there. The cheesecake factory salads are all supposed to be 590 cals or lower and they all came back over 1000 cals!! Basically.....just because a restaraunt says that its healthy, doesnt mean that its actually true. You might as well just order the regular stuff and enjoy it. So basically, we need to focus on the amount of food we eat when we go out.... Posted on 05/21/08, 02:05 pm |

There are calorie books that contain fast food items and their calorie count. I would trust that book more than what restaurants estimate.
Restaurants are not required to give calorie counts. I too worked in the industry for 15 years. About 10 of them working for CPK. They measured everything scrupulously especially meats and cheeses. They would weigh the meats and put them in baggies. Since they have locations all over the U.S. their goal is to have every item taste and be the same as any other location. The 2 highest costs in the business is food and labor. Managers are given bonus's based on keeping these #'s low. I try to not go out to eat. Especially in places where they are going to give you bread/tortilla chips immediately. It is difficult to not eat these items. I tell them not to bring it to the table. If you know about food then common sense would tell you what looks to be fattening. Keep the calorie book with you and make informed decisions.

I dont think you should have to bring a calorie counting book with you. The point of resturants sharing the calorie intake and what not is to help you, not hinder you. But if they really are not telling the truth, the resturant should be held accountable. If there is someone that goes out to eat and they make a bad choice by ordering fatting, grease dripping food or food just not good for them and they are not trying to lose weight, it is held accountable for person ordering.
Now if there is someone that is on a "diet" trying to lose weight or just be healthy, they are picking things that are less calorie and fat, THEY THINK from the information given to them. The resurant should be held accountable, that is misguiding really bad. We should beable to trust these places and make sure they are giving us the accurat information and not have to take a book with us. But the whole point is, they are giving the wrong information and need to be held accountable.

Jennifer - I couldn't agree more with your post. This topic not only angered me but inspired me to do some research and write a blog post on the subject.
I am simply amazed at the results I found! Fortunately, King County in Washington state leads this battle followed by a judge ruling in NYC. You can read more at http://www.ranaesheart.com/2008/05... Madicakes ~ Thank you for the your post, the information you provided and the inspiration! Ranae

Thatperson asked: How did people lose weight before calories were posted by restaurants and food chains?
01. Eating out back then was considered a treat. And not something done either every day (or, for some, every meal) like today. 02. The food portions in your average kid's meal, for example, is what everyone ate back then. This means you did not Supersize your fries or drink. 03. There was no such thing as the "two minute lunch". People actually had this magical time period called *a lunch hour* that -- can you believe it?! -- was actually an hour and they had time to *walk some where nearby, eat and walk back to the office*. A lot of jobs (office and otherwise) you're lucky if you have that two minutes to inhale (and don't even think about tasting what you're eating) something from the vending machine or your brought from home food. 04. "What do you mean 'I have to take the stairs?! What's wrong with the elevator this week?'" Used to be, to get from the Lobby to one's office, one did not have to ride up an elevator shaft in a building that's so darned high that your ears actually pop before you got there. 05. Anyone remember weekends? Back then, you did not live at the job and simply visit your house (and/or immediate family) on Sundays. 06. No sitting, stuck in gridlock, for two or three hours -- to and from the job -- back then.
