Restaraunts that have lied about their menu...

So I was watching the news last night, and they did this story where these women went to a few restaraunts and ordered things off their "weight management" menus.
I think the places they went were: -Taco Bell (Fresca Tacos) -Cheese Cake Factory (Weight management salads) -Chilis (Guilt-less menu) -Applebee's (Weight Watchers Menu) -Wendys (I think....their healthy grilled chicken stuff or something) And anyways....they took these foods back to a lab and tested them for their calories and fat content. And every single one of those foods came back with almost twice the amount of calories and sometimes 3 times the amount of fat content that they stated was actually in there. The cheesecake factory salads are all supposed to be 590 cals or lower and they all came back over 1000 cals!! Basically.....just because a restaraunt says that its healthy, doesnt mean that its actually true. You might as well just order the regular stuff and enjoy it. So basically, we need to focus on the amount of food we eat when we go out.... Posted on 05/21/08, 02:05 pm |

BASTARDS!!!! Well I'm not surprised and I'm glad I know now. I'm usually so jaded, bitter and skeptical, but I was naive about this. Good info to have, thanks for posting.

You have to remember that these nutrition facts are up to human error.. maybe it is not a lie.
I worked in restaurants as a manager for 15 years. I know one of the hardest things was to control the portioning of whoever was preparing the foods. So if the foods were prepared correctly, then the nutrition facts would be correct. Facts are... most of the employees tend to be heavy handed with ingredients and portions (except the few who actually skimp on the portions). It is difficult to measure everything. They have to practice and learn to eyeball it. If there is no regular measuring and comparing, portion sizes get way out of control. so.. yes... the nutrition facts are not always correct. Human error is absolutely a factor, but that is what you would expect by food made by hand. The stuff we get in grocery stores is weighed and measured exactly each time... usually in a factory or something. I know that 8 oz of chicken in a restaurant is not always 8 ounces... not all chickens have the same sized breasts. a TBSP of sour cream is not the same to all people... they may dollop sometimes and other times they may overload the spoon. It would definitely be frustrating for those who are counting the calories and stuff.

Mkat....I cant understand human error. But human error that prepares a meal 3 times as fatening as it supposed to be, seems a little more than just human error, to me. And kellyaa...I know, that would really suck if your diet meals were lieing to you. Thats why I just eat regular food all the time and work out. I just eat small portions and dont drink soda or eat that much sugar and more veggies than bread. and LP, yes, Bastards is right.

Yeah, some of differences are a bit too high to be simply unintentional error. And its not the first time reports like this came out exposing the dark side of "healthy" choices. The same situation exists for most "Healthy" or "Diet" versions of foods we buy in supermarkets.
My take is simple, when I allot a free day, I simply order as I please and enjoy myself that day. Can always work it off in the gym.

i went to IHOP and order this breakfast the other day that was 'under 600 calories' (pancakes and eggs) and a few weeks later i went back and noticed i had more eggs than the time before. i know its something little, but i can understand ... different people cooking , people mess up!

I was just at the Cheesecake Factory this weekend and had the Weight Management Asian salad!!! lol I think the best thing to do is to ask for the dressings on the side so you have a little bit more control. They tend to drench salads with huge amounts of unnecessary dressing so doing this will eliminate some of the fat and the human-error.

Yea, I do not trust eating at resteraunts-they do lie. I have really bad food allergies and have asked on numerous occasions if a product has eggs or milk in it and they will say no- and lo and behold I have an allergic reactions right after I eat my meal. Luckily, I don't go into anaphalctic shock, but I do get severe hives, face swelling and numbness, cold/flu symptoms, and respitory infections. So it does not suprtise me that these places have inaccurate info on their menus just so you will buy their food.

Oh, Our local news did that also and yes! All the food came back doubled in calories. I was shocked! No wonder we're all still gaining weight.
