This is my first post on this support group site. I have been overweight most of my life and have managed to be healthy until I turned 50. I am now about 4 months to turning 60. My doctor told me that I may have a kidney concern. It is primarily due to my hypertension. I was doing good on my diet. In February I had a perfect blood pressure. But I have gained l5 pounds since then. I primarily just sit in the house and ate. I do want to live longer and live a better life. I really need to lose at least one hundred pounds. I have watched what I have eaten since I went to the doctor last week but they are still working with me on my kidneys. My mom just died from complications of kidnedy disease so I am really shaken up now. I really do not want to go on dialysis. So I am going to try really hard to achieve my first goal of losing ten pounds. I had already lost 4 1/2 pds since last week. So I am praying that I can receive encouragement and offer some encouragement. I use to chair a weight support ministry in my church and we really did well. I have also been a member of weight watchers successfully. I am wishinig that everyone be successful in their weight management.

Best of Luck with the weightloss!
You should watch 'Forks over Knives', it is a very interesting documentary on how you diet can help you extend and improve you life. I watched it last week and it has truly opened my eyes.

Welcome Denny! I'm so sorry to hear about your kidney issue but I'm confident you can continue to lose weight, eat better and start to build up your exercise routine. I had developed borderline LDL levels so I stopped smoking (10 years ago), started walking and cut out the awful crappy foods from my life. It really works and I feel so much better at age 58 than I did 10 years ago.
You CAN and WILL get much healthier! Just stick to your lifestyle change and when you slip (and you will), go right back to your plan without beating yourself up about it!

Denny,
Welcome to DS and the diet support group. I'm about a year behind you, I turn 59 in a couple months. I hit 250 a couple months ago and finally decided to do something about it. I won't deny that it is hard, too many good things to give up. But losing weight and being able to referee soccer games again is an appealing goal to me. You can do it! I found that being willing to be upfront with the real numbers here in this group really helps a lot! Gentle hugs and keep up the good work!

Hi Denny! Welcome to the group! You are not alone in your struggles. I've struggled all my life with my weight as well. At one point, I had lost 80 lbs. So, I've done well at losing in my past, but I always pile much of it right back on (Profile pic is of me at my lower weight...my present goal to reach). Since that pic, I've gained 25 pounds, lost it and gained 35 again, 15 of which I put in in just 5 months. I have GERD and Hiatal Hernia, so extra weight can make things very difficult for me. I decided to get serious again, and so far I've lost 6 lbs. This time, I'm going for slower losses and developing healthier habits instead of just dieting.
You've made a great decision in coming here. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress. Best wishes to you!

Hi Denny:
You are not alone. I am a little older, I will be 62 next month. My weight varies from 103 to 175. At present I am 155, and would like to lose at least 20. My problem is my binges, so I am trying something different. I will eat every 2 hrs and smaller portions at meals. I have been doing this for 3 days, and at least it has stopped my binges. I will take one day at a time and realize this is a life style change. Thanks for posting and my best to you and everyone. The support on DS is wonderful......

Hi DW,
Welcome to DW. I have been so encouraged since I have read all of the posts. Special good luck to you. By reading the different posts, have really helped me have more willpower. I have started planning my meals better. For tonight's dinner, I cooked a very simple meal. I poured a little olive oil in the skillet and stir-fried onions, red (good for kidneys) and green peppers and about 15 small shrimp. I also had 1/2 cup of brown rice with black eyed peas. For dessert I had 1/2 cup plain vogurt with frest blueberries. I hope that this recipe helps those who are still working and don't have much time to cook. Go Bless Everyone, Denny

That dinner sounded really good and I just happen to have a bag of frozen shrimp in my freezer. That's what my husband and I will have for dinner tomorrow night. Thanks Denny.
