when ice cream comes home

What does one do when the person they live with insists on bringing home ice cream? I don't mind cookies or sherbet or cheesecake but ice cream is my all time favorite and so, so hard for me to resist. I've asked that he go out for ice cream when he has to have it but to no avail. He still walks in the door with a tub. I DO NOT WANT TO BE A TUB ;) so I wish he'd stop!
Am I being unreasonable? Do I just need to suck it up and have better will power??? Do others face similar temptations? Posted on 06/15/12, 09:40 pm |

If you like bananas this will help...cut up some bananas and freeze them for several hours or overnight...put them in a blender with a small amount of milk or yogurt...I prefer yogurt...you can also add peanut butter, cocoa, or whatever else you like...if the bananas are really ripe there will be no need for sweetener but if you want you can add some...when it is blended it comes out like a soft serve ice cream and help with wanting the real thing

and yes, we all face temptations of one kind or another...I try not to deprive myself to much or I will binge...If I allow myself a small portion I do better...I just try to fit it into my calorie allowance or exercise a bit more

Easy way to combat this is that you buy the icecream. You can select a lower calorie one and a smaller tub.
And to be perfectly honest i don't think you are being unreasonable. I have had that exact discussion with my partner about chocolate. I told him, how hard it was for me, and how i felt watching him eat it, the mixture of hate, disgust and rage at him, the icecream and myself for not having more will power. My compromise was that every saturday, we would buy a small bag of candy. Then during the week it was a candy free house. Because lets be honest, you dont need to treat yourself EVERYDAY, once a week is much better. Then on saturdays i would do a extra workout to enjoy the candy. And it is okay to enjoy your favorites in moderation, so rather then fight it, plan it into your diet.

thank you Carissamr and eekrrs for your feedback. To be honest I have found more support on this site than I have in my own home. I am an emotional eater and am enraged and frustrated with myself that I cannot simply walk away. Sometimes I binge... moderation goes right out the door... then I hate myself....
I will substitute something else while he sits on the couch and eats his giant bowl of ice cream or I will leave the house and take the dog for a walk... Thanks again for the input.

I'm an emotional eater too, so I know it's very difficult sometimes. I'm sorry you don't have the support at home that you need. It is certainly not unreasonable to feel the way you do. My hubby is pretty good about not bringing things in, or hiding things so I won't be tempted. Of course, you can't really hide ice cream too well. I would do as suggested and buy a low-cal/fat flavor of ice cream, maybe the same flavor as your husband buys if you like it. That way, you won't be tempted to get into his, because you'll have the same thing. And definitely plan these treats into your diet. I love ice cream too and all sweets. I actually eat ice cream most days, and I'm still losing weight fine because I plan for it. Planning and portion control are great and will allow you to eat treats without guilt. If the portion seems small, add some fruit. If you feel you can't stop, it might sound cliche, but go for a walk or engage in another activity. It has helped me to avoid temptation. And if you fail sometimes, don't beat yourself up. Just keep on going and working to change those habits. It takes time to change habits. Good luck to you.

when he has a bowl of ice cream, have a bowl of plain greek yogurt with a sliced banana in it and fold it in and enjoy... it's great! you can also try other fruits like blueberryies etc. .

Cool idea about the bananas never heard that one will have to try it I too bought a lower calorie version Weight Watchers has some wonderful ice cream bars that are so satisfying and if I have a bowl was careful to only have a small helping I think if you deny yourself it will only cause you to eat the whole gallon in the end LOL my husband of 30 years is this long lanky drink of water who can eat anything and never gain a pound he's pretty good when I talk to him but sometimes will bring me home what he thinks is a treat to tell me that he loves me no matter how big I am! so it can be a battle!!!

I love ice cream too - what I do now (as I cannot resisit) is buy myself a small tub which is about 200-300 calories and just eat that!!!!
Or you could have something like an icelolly with ice cream in they are usually about 100 calories so a bit of what you fancy without the calories!!!!

this might sound flippy, but, ice cream, we can handle. it's when my spouse brings home alcohol that I have problems. I can honestly say I haven't been in a liquor store in decades, but I always have booze around.
Be glad it's just ice cream. some addictions are life threatening. I guess this all comes under the term "co dependency."

I have said NO when my son and husband asked if I wanted ice cream and I was so proud of myself. That is my weekness, sweets of anykind. I hate buying snacks because thats where I turn when feeling down and depressed or lonely. Not a good thing cuz then I binge on foods. I'm trying to learn more control. At this point I am not having any sweets, carbs, sugars, etc. I feel like if I eat it I want more so right now I'm on day 5 of only lean meats, fruits and veggies. I am very proud of myself for having control. They say it takes 28 days to break a habit. I've done it before and no matter how many times I fail, I never give up and try and try again. Only I can make the right decision for my self and if I want it bad enough I have to take control and be able to resist. Its the hardest thing to do but you can do this!!!!
