I'd try to get him to use olive oil instead of butter. He needs to consume fats in moderation. So if you use olive oil, don't just put the bottle down in front of him. Give him a portion in a very small bowl or ramekin. I think there are some spread type products that mix olive oil and either butter or margarine - I think Land of Lakes makes one. You might try switching him over to that. Again, don't let him have the tub. Give him a small portion and try to get him to limit himself to that much at a meal.

If he's very old, I'd let him eat butter. Otherwise, yes, olive oil, and coconut oil are good alternatives.

My nutritionist says DO NOT GIVE UP BUTTER... the fake butters are worse for you than " real wholesome natural " foods

smart balance is the way to go... high in omegas and good fats.
i'm not talking fake butter. butter is fine in moderation but if you're looking to eat healthy... butter isn't a staple. margarine has hydroginated oils in it which is so bad for you. anything hydroginated... peanut butter too! you can also use smart balance peanut butter... has no crap in it. check lables but bottom line no one NEEDS butter.

My mother used to mix butter and olive oil together in her blender. This made the butter spreadable and her and my dad still kept the butter, in moderation.

I really like "I can't believe it's not butter". The spray works great on veggies, baked potatoes, etc.
