I am a young woman in my mid- thirties who is about 75 pounds overweight. I am also unemployed and broke and cannot afford a gym or a weight mgmt. system like Jenny Craig or similar. I was wondering if anyone could recommend some diet and exercise options. I am going to be walking my dog more but, due to weather changing fast in the northeastern US, not much time til sleet and snow time. If you need more info., just let me know.

I highly recommend Sparkpeople.com for exercise info. They have lots of suggestions and short videos to work with. The site has lots of other things to which will help you with weight loss.
On cheap item you can by for under $10 is resistance bands! Sparkspeople have excerises for them too. Also there are lots of things you can do around the house....when I heat something in the micro wave...say coffee for 90 seconds while I wait I do 20 push ups on the kitchen counter. Just use your imagination.

Lots of people here have successfully lost weight by counting calories. If you read through the old posts on this board, you will pick up a wealth of information and sites that help you do things like figure out your bmi, and calculate and track calories. One starting point is just to keep track of everything you consume in a week, and they analyze it, by figuring out how many calories you are taking in each day, and looking for patterns and things you can change.
Lots of people here have also successfully lost weight by coming up with a plan for improving their eating habits. This involves educating yourself about healthy foods and healthy portions of various foods, making a plan, revising it as necessary, and following it. These steps don't cost any money. As for exercise, I agree with JoyceMarilyn that there is a lot of exercise information available for free on the internet. You can also get DVDs and books about fitness and exercise at the library, for free. Sometimes there are free or very low cost exercise/fitness classes at community colleges or at local parks. If I lived in a very cold climate, I would try to find an exercise DVD that I could use during the winter months. If money was a concern, I'd try some different DVDs from the library first, find one (or more) I liked, and then buy it (or them), hopefully for cheap on Ebay.

Right now I enjoy the Zone diet. I have there new book Toxic Fat I bought for $5 on e-bay. You can find all the information you need on line. http://www.zonediet.com/ and You Tube has lots of info on it too.
I also recommend the Mediterranean Diet, http://www.oldwayspt.org/med_pyram... The Harvard School of Public Health, http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutrit... Dr Weil anti inflammatory diet. http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/ART020... Before I had a gym membership I walked at the mall when weather is bad. Our mall opens for walkers at 6.

Nytwolf,
Beesley's advice is great; all too often we just forget to do the basics. Her library advice is wonderful. If you don't find videos to your liking, there are plenty of exercise books. I read one not too long ago (from the library - Jorge Cruise's 8 Minutes in the Morning to a Flat Belly). I liked the exercises, but I did not necessarily agree with the "8 minutes" principle. Even simple exercises, e.g. crunches, running in place/ jumping jacks, jump rope, lunges/squats work well, and work indoors at times of inclement weather. And the best part is, they are free (well, the jump rope may set you back a bit if you don't have one). If you live in a multi-story building (or near one), you can do stairs. Just make sure that you pace yourself, start off easy, and plan for the long term. Setting unrealistic goals is the easiest way to demoralize yourself and fail. I would also like to add that if you have the time on your hands, you can probably do better than Jenny Craig/ others. Fresh vegetables and lean protein are likely to be less expensive to cook up than ordering the food (and you know exactly what you put in). DailyFoodDiary's diary (paper or electronic) is also a good suggestion. I personally like the simple paper variety (but I admit that electronic is easier to tally/ use). You can also look up "the portion control plate" - basically, it is a way to divide your plate up so that you can visually control portions. The current thought is 1/2 of the plate of vegetables, 1/4 of the plate of lean protein, and 1/4 of the plate of starch (e.g. potatoes, etc.). Good luck. Jason Chen, Researcher/ Writer www.20bmi.com
