Here are a couple of sites that I found with exercises on them. I have had back surgery for this problem, and I would make sure that you check with your doc before you do any exercises. Maybe your doc could recommend some physical therapy for you so that you learn to do the exercises right. You will not be able to do the type of exercises that you are used to doing so it is best to get some guidance. I wish you luck with you trouble, and try to get a prescription for some therapy. That is your best option.
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-t... http://www.bukisa.com/articles/260... The other thing is to make sure that you are snacking on the right items. Make sure that you have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetable to snack on. Don't sit there and feel that you are doomed. That is so easy to do. When I was laid up before my surgery, I started to snack on the right foods and actually lost weight when I couldn't even move. I was stuck in bed for 6 weeks before they decided to do surgery and actually lost weight just laying there. I was determined that I was not going to gain. weight. I wish you luck with this problem. It is very painful and make sure that you don't start using it as an excuse to weight gain. It is a very easy thing to do.

My first thought was to see a physiotherapist to get exercises that will avoid your back issues. In order to lessen your back pains, it will help to strengthen the surrounding area. You will get that sort of direction from physio. Try it and see how it goes.
Your dr ruled out lunges and squats but what was suggested for you to do? If you can't run, can you bike? You could move your cardio to a stationary bike. You will need to clean up your diet, but you already know that. No matter what you do with the exercise, you will just be wasting your time because you just pig out after. What's the point of doing cardio to burn 400calories only to turn around and eat a 600calorie hamburger? Fix your diet and drink half your body weight in ounces of water a day. Go to physio for good advice.

Doris,
What were some of your snacks, besides fruits and veggies? I sit at work and snack but not on the right stuff.
