Lower belly fat

It's genetic to a point in my family, we all have a little pooch....ME however, I've always had the biggest and it only seems to be getting bigger! All of this is just depressing me!!! I feel I'm never going to be able to look the way I want and that makes me depressed and when I'm depressed I eat. I never used to, I used to NOT eat when I was depressed....Anyway, off topic there.....Anyone have personal experience and advice to give to help me get rid of my lower belly fat or at least reduce it substantially? I have upper belly fat too but I know most of that is the booze which is why I'm not drinking and it's easier for me to lose. Any foods and or exercises anyone can recommend? I know cardio is very important and I'm doing my best to do as much cardio possible....But is 30-60 mins of brisk walking really enough? I don't belong to a gym and can't afford it and my knees are bad so I can't run anymore. I like some of my cardio DVD's I have but ALL of them incorporate squats into the workouts and I just can't tolerate them, They hurt my knees so much!!

" Hi AC,

I think that you should ease into this. Setting yourself up for unrealistic goals is the first step towards failure. The good news is that you can do this IF you set your mind to do it, and you DO it consistently.

I suggest that the first thing you do is pay a visit to your doctor, and make sure that there is nothing that would prevent you from initiating an exercise routine (e.g. heart condition, etc.). He/She may be able to make some general suggestions on (1) diet, and (2) exercise. Heed that advice above anything else you receive; you and your doctor are the best team for this.

The second thing I suggest you do is understand that even the smallest amount of exercise does wonders if you do it consistently. By all means, start with walking. We did some research on the matter and walking is a great exercise. (If you are interested, take a look at a write up that we did on moderate exercise: http://www.20bmi.com/diet/exercise... ).

In one of the studies that we came across (Irwin, cited on our website) concluded that moderate exercise (walking about 35 minutes on average), a group of 173 women (average age 61, average weight 205) lost about 5% of their belly fat.

I think that walking is likely to be a fine way to start. And, aside from weight loss, there are other benefits too - cardio, emotional, etc.

So, please cheer up; all is not lost, nor will it be. As they say, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Regards,
Jason Chen
