I just recently got out of a relationship that ended with domestic violence only a week and a half ago. But for the last Year i have been packing on the pounds, and depression is running strong. Now even more so. I just moved in with my sister and i am job hunting so im home alone all day. I cant sleep at night because of the depression and stress so I eat. and today i realized that as soon as i started thinking about my ex or being unemployed i ran to the cupboard to grab a snack.
I dont want to be like this! I looked in the mirror, and all i saw was a sad 19 yearold with dark unhealthy circles under her eyes and a huge belly to match. I miss my 144 pound body. But i cant stop going to the cupboard and sodas for comfort. I need help, Suggestions? I need support! I want to start running again and being in really good shape. Posted on 09/03/09, 02:09 am |

sounds like your under alot of stress, moving, finding a job and everything! so you know dont give yourself a hard time coz your only human and maybe you have to take baby steps. set your self a goal each day - i like to write it down and tick it off and it just lifts my depressive mood sometimes, and it may be something simple, so maybe set your self a goal for running, exercise can really help with depression and its good for getting healthy too.

Your depression, stress and sleeplessness may be causing your eating, but your diet will make those problems worse. It's a viscious circle.
When I started to make healthy choices and exercise, after just a week I slept better and my mood was lifted. For exercise, you could start with just increasing how much you walk. You say that you're job hunting and therefore home alone - why not go make inquires on foot? Being out and about will be much better for you.

You could just work on one healthy change per week. You could start with knocking out the soda, switching to water. See if you can do that for a day, then a week. Then add another change the following week.

Yes I agree with the baby set approach to weight loss...small changes.
You have to break the 'grab something to eat' habit. Next time you go for that comfort snack - stop or if you already started put it down and do 10 minutes of some exercise. Such as simple stretches or crunches if you have no exercise equiptment. Then decide if you really want that food. Also drink water, water and more water. You should be drinking 1/2 your body weight in ounces everyday.

I think the fact that you are ready and willing to change is a good sign. And it sounds like you really got rid of a lot of bad things that were holding you down.
Maybe you can start working on the depression issues first. I think that will really help. I am also trying to take small steps and get back into getting fit after a surgery and some weight gain. I think this group will really help you, too! Good luck!

The first thing you need to start with, don't look at the mirror to start your assessment. Always start with something positive, so the harder things are easier to work with. You don't need to be like that either, but all that really matters is that you make yourself happy with you. Start walking again, change out the cupboards so that every time you look in it you have multiple choices. Do what you love and let that take you to better health.
