Hemo dialysis at home

The Dr & nurses have recommended to me that I would do quite well with dialysis at home. I was doing PD for 5 years. That is no longer an option for me becuase of infection and lasting stomach adhessions that will not heel.

I am wondering if anyone else is doing hemo at home and how they like it. What is involved in it, how much set up time each day, ect. I know that I would do it 6 days a weeks, 2 hours each day. I am thinking that I may feel better by doing it each days rathe than only 3x's a week. ALso I am so tired after each treatment, does that happen at home also?

Anyone who could answer any of these ?'s I would love to hear from you.

" Hi,my name is Lasha.I have been on home-hemo for almost 2 years.I like it very much. You do have to set up your own machine, stick yourself, draw your own labs, and give yourself I.V. meds while on the machine. But I like that I am in control of my own healthcare 7 days a week. And no it does not make you tired like in-clinic dialysis. " Generally speaking the more often and longer you dialize the better you should feel.
I've never done it at home but I think I'd schedule my 3 or 4 hours TV time and do it 7 days a week. "

" My husband has been on home hemodialysis for 4 months and I'm his partner on it. He feels much better at home and really prefers it. You are in control and he isn't as tired as he is at the dialysis centers. He uses NxStage kidney machine with Davita. It's really great. You can also travel with your NxStage and take it on vacations with you. "

" go for it Nxstage davita they trained us and supervised the instalation of equipment. my husband was the patient--i helped he dialyzed 6 of seven days loved not monitoring the fluid intake as strickly as he had to over the weekend between treatments. i loved setting our schedule socially we coud partake in more family activities and maybe start dialysis late one eveing but that is because we had a little fun out of the house--so what if we ran alittle late on dialysis david letterman's on late! :) good luck. also they have 24 hour on call help even for the silliest questions. my husband uses blunt needles so sticking himslef as you call it wasn't too awful his was refferred to as a button hole and it wasn't too different from putting a pierced earing in. i even created the second set of button holes incase he ever needed assistance than i had the angle down and couldwhip it in and he was off and running! " Hemo at home is going to change the machines are smaller and companies are offering training to anyone who will be assisting you. I'm concidering the option for my mom. You get to do it on your own time, a place your comfortable with, and your immunities won't be affected. "

" NxStage is the one who has created the smaller equipment. It's so much better. Thank goodness for technology "

" I am an at home hemo patient. My prescription is dialyse at night when I sleep so my days are free. There is some set up and machine maintenance but its better than going to the hospital. Some people find it so good they are not considering a transplant. I hear its much better for you especially on your heart. You have been offered a gift from your Doctors so take it. "

" My mother and I have just starting this week training to put my father on home dialysis. He is suppose to have his own machine and stuff beginning the week after Thanksgiving. They tell us that it will be alot better for him too. So I guess we will just have to see. "
