FISTULA PLACEMENT

WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS HAD TO HAVE THEIR FISTULA SURGERY HIGHER UP ON THE ARM & IF THEIR FISTULA WAS ON THEIR DOMINANT ARM. MY VEINS ARE BETTER IN MY DOMINANT ARM SO THEY WANT TO TRY TO DO THE SURGERY AT WRIST LEVEL BUT IF THAT DOESN'T WORK,WILL HAVE TO GO AT INNER ELBOW LEVEL WHICH IS NOT AS GOOD. IF THEY PUT THE FISTULA ON MY NONDONIMANT ARM THEY WOULD HAVE TO START AT THE INNER ELBOW & PUT IN A GRAFT, NOT AN IDEAL OPTION. NEEDLESS TO SAY I'M DEVASTATED WITH THESE OPTIONS. ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS

Gosh, I don't know too much about how they decide on placement but I would think that it would be easier to have it up on your arm instead of at the wrist.
Do you go to a clinic now? If so, I would ask those others that are currently being dialyized with the fistula in the different places. If you do not currently get dialized at a clinc, I still think you should be able to go in and ask a few questions from the director of nursing to help ease your mind a bit. Good luck to you.

Be sure to get advice from more than one doctor or clinic. My fistula is in non dominant arm high up inch above elbow. Mine is deep which has proven to be good for me and dialysis. I went in expecting to have a graft ( goretex ) but when surgeons were in my arm they found a good artery and vein. Try to stay positive. Good Luck and God Bless

They did the same with me. They put it in my dominant just above the elbow. They went to put a graft in and found out they didn't have to use a graft. It works very well up there. I think it's more cmfortable up there then it would be on my wrist!!
