" I do not know a lot about this but I do know that once the surgery is done, just like having a fisutla or graft, it has to heal for a spell before using it.

I also know that the people that I have known and met that do PD, seem to feel better, have a little less restrictive life as they are doing a treatment every day instead of 3 or 4 times a week.

So, toxins don't build up like with hemo and in general, the people that do this treatment just seem to feel better.

That did not answer you main question but davita has a website that has a great set up for patient info. "

" It was out patient surgery for me. It took about a month before it could be used for dialysis. PD was great. I really liked it. "

" Hi Sue,

Both my catheter placement for PD, and my fistula were outpatient.

For the cath, you'll be a bit sore for a few days, but not bad at all.
I was given vicodin for the pain, but only took it for 2.5 days, after that it was a bit uncomfortable, yet not painful.

Good luck!!

Marina "

" I myself was on PD as well and the place i had mine done they sent me home after a few hrs id say 2 or 3 big mistake on there part. When you do have you PD cath surgery make sure afterwards you aren't throwing up after surgery when they send you home if that does happen though call your doctor ASAP they might admit you back into the hospital thats what happened to me. " I had mine in hospital and had to stay in hospital for a week and half but thats because my bichem was that bad. As for the OP it was easy, i was out soon as they injected the stuff, and i was sore but for a little bit. "

" I had a pd catheter from 11/08 until last month. You cant shower for weeks after the surgery but then you can. You cant sit in water so swimming and bathing are out completely. "

" Hi Sue,
My mom just had the pd catheter inserted on 10/05...she was in the hospital for about 8-9 hours...she was a bit nauseous from the anesthesia..but they gave her a shot for that. They also found an umbilical hernia that they had to repair...entire surgery was only about 1 1/4 hours for both procedures. She was in a bit of pain...took the tylenol 3 for a day and then got severely sick from the tylenol 3...she said that thin incisions really didn't hurt that much. She just got to take her FIRST shower in two and one half weeks...SHE WAS SO EXCITED AND FELT LIKE A NEW WOMAN---THE "BIRD BATHS" CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH!!! Hope this helps! She feels great today...but they will not be able to actively use the catheter(other than getting it flushed) for 6 weeks...as they want the hernia surgery to completely heal. Best of luck!! "
