Proteinuria and eGFR

I am aware of protein in the urine since January. Lots of protein. I am now using the Albustix dip sticks at home and I'm showing 100 mostly and sometimes 300. It never falls below this amount.
I saw the Nephrologist for the second time a couple of weeks ago and he said my tests are OK and to keep blood pressure and diabetes under control (which they are) and to see him again in a year. Today I picked up my test results and it's showing eGFR at 54. He said all my tests came back OK and they did except for the protein and the eGFR. I just want to make sure this is something that does not need to be followed more closely. Does waiting a year to be rechecked sound reasonable? Posted on 08/19/08, 07:08 pm |

Hi, I have CKD and my GFR is 47, I dont have any problems with protein, I have tests every 6 months, I started with a GFR of 51 18 months ago and since then I have been tested regularly. I am diabetic (on insulin) my b/p is ok, have they told you not to take anti inflammatories, they didnt tell me that, it was only when I was reading up about it that I discovered it.
I would have thought that your Nephrologist would have known what he was talking about. They must do things differently where you are, but 1 year seems too long to me. Maybe someone else on here might be able to give you more info. A good website is kidney.org.uk they would certainly know on there. Good luck.

Isn't your regular Doctor, you GP or your Diabetes Doctor, monitoring all that stuff?
You really don't need a specialist until you're approaching dialysis. So for now be happy he doesn't want to see you more often. You can discuss any concerns with your GP and see the nephrologist if you feel the need.

Thanks Bonnytiz and OC:
OK - I got the feeling from my GP that he was turning this over to the Nephrologist. I see where you are coming from OC. My last kidney blood work was done in June. My next appointment with GP is first of March -- that will be 9 months between blood tests. Not seeing anyone else. Guess they feel that's OK. As long as this is the norm, I'm OK with that. Thanks for the info. That makes me feel better.

I'm no expert on Diabetes but it seems everything relaed should be checked every 3 or 4 months by someone. Your GP can do that hence my comment above.
