This is the recommendation from the ADA about balancing your food intake. But I find the carbs to be a bit high for me. Since we are going more vegetarian in our household, we have increased the fruits and veggie area and decreased the carb area. Ive noticed a significant drop in BG readings since incoroporating the vegetarian lifestyle.

" I'm carb counting instead of using the plate method or food pyramid. I didn't think I would like counting, but it's actually easy. "

" I've found that too B. People are often intimidated by the whole counting and sliding scale issue. But it really isn't too bad. Its just a matter of getting used to something new. But in reality it gives diabetics MUCH more control over their blood sugars. "

" I use Sugar Busters but add some carbs so I count them when I have too. If I could eat a lot more fruit then I could become a vegan easily. "

" Sunn - I* don't think you could become a vegan because they can eat a lot that we can't ie. pasta, cake, etc. "

" I am so dense when it comes to this dietary pyramid. I've seen it before and I had been trying to keep the starches to a minimum and the proteins higher. On this chart the exact opposite seems to be the rule. Starches such as bread are a much larger portion of the chart and meats and vegetables much lesser.

I am going to die of ignorance before I can get this all down. This is so frustrating, not only the discipline of missing out on food I like but feeling stupid to not understand. I need someone to feed me and read to me. LOL "

" Curtis,
You make me laugh!!! I can remember feeling the same way and having the girls In ADA yell at me cause my sugar was up.
They tell you eat starches, bread, everything with carbs..well I did and my sugars went up!!
If you go in the hospital they give you potatoes, rolls, white rice well....then they come after you with insulin shot cause your sugar is 300.
Is it any wonder people get confused...
I am probably going to get creamated here for this but I would say stay away from white stuff, anything made with white flour for awhile and I bet your BS comes down. Of course that is all the good stuff we eat (comfort) like potatoes, white rice, white pasta so what's left?
Sweet potatoes, brown rice you will get used to it, salads, cheese, lots of chicken and fresh fish in washington? And the bonus all the vegies are a yes I think.Lol
Make ham and cheese roll ups if you don't like dark breads, hard boiled eggs keep handy for when your starving and need a quick acceptable fix! Don't believe anything you read on a box that say sugar free..or no sugar added. Your gonna have to camp out in the super market a few times reading all the crap and it takes a long time but once you get it down you can live with the three items you found for weeks!! Just kidding, but you have to laugh here or it will kill you with all the frustration.
I learned here about Dreamfield's Pasta it is in a black and red box, look for it low carbs and believe it or not it is good!!!
Haven't found a good spaghetti yet.
Don't die yet, people will help, little by little you learn and then you can bitch about not being able to eat hot fudge or oreo's like the rest of us...Hang in there, hope this helps a little.. "

" You don't like Dreamfields spaghetti "???????????/ I adore it - maybe because I lover spaghetti.

Curtis, i think you weren't looking at a diabetic pyramid - also, if it was dont believe everything you read. There are many things to eat - after 11 years I found one or two ! Sunn is right - nothing white except cauliflower. But you will learn to alter recipes to taste like the real thing like using smashed nuts instead of bread crumbs, oatmeal in meatloaf instead of bread crumbs. No fast food restaurants whatsoever. They put weird ingredients in their food. It'll come in time - it takes a long time and it certainly isn't easy. "

" p. s. Curtis - if you've got the money you can get someone to feed and read to you (among other things) "
