Meats and Fats

The effect that meat and fat has on metabolic syndrome (the precursor to DT2) was elaborated on through a study conducted in the Jan edition of Journal of the American Heart Association.

Just two servings of meat and/or fried foods per day increases risk of developing metabolic syndrome by 25 percent compared with those who eat meat twice a week.

Dairy products, by contrast, appeared to offer some protection against metabolic syndrome.

Which in my opinion is odd since dairy is a meat "product".

Anyways, in general, the westernized diet was heavy on refined grains, processed meat, fried foods, red meat, eggs and soda, and light on fish, fruit, vegetables and whole grain products.

Prudent diet eating patterns, by contrast, favored cruciferous vegetables (e.g., cabbage, radish and broccoli), carotenoid vegetables (e.g., carrots, pumpkins, red pepper, cabbage, broccoli and spinach), fruit, fish and seafood, poultry and whole grains, along with low-fat dairy.

After nine years of follow-up, 3,782 (nearly 40 percent) of the participants had three or more of the risk factors for metabolic syndrome. 40 percent!!!! That's a huge amount of people at risk for type 2 diabetes strictly through diet alone!

This study emphasises how much dietary lifestyle contributes to the onset of diabetes. It really makes you consider what you should be eating.

" Yet there are many health organisations - including the heart one here in this country - who advocate eating lean meats, fish and poultry to keep healthy.

Too much fat is not good especially the trans fats.

BTW my husband is an industrial chemist and worked in the food industry - he is retired now. "

" Yes I know people like that too and they are very fortunate to have the metabolism to be able to do it.
I know I do not - that does not meant that I never eat friend food - I just limit the amount. But I sure do enjoy it when I do have it as a treat.

NUTS? having just had some after the evening meal - to finish it off - they do say that nuts are very healthy for you in moderation.
But that is the same with most things isn't it? "

" Palyn, I believe flaming is against TOS. I suggest you knock it off. The Doctor very clearly addressed more than nuts. He spoke about limited saturated meat-based fats to 10% of daily caloric intake, not vegetarianism. He also discussed vegetables and avocados. Again, all excellent advice. Thank you SF. "

" Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, elevated insulin levels, excess body fat around the waist or abnormal cholesterol levels — that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. (Mayo Clinic) "

" For many years, physicians have recognized that elevated blood glucose levels, high blood pressure, obesity, and abnormal blood lipid levels tend to occur together in certain individuals. This cluster of symptoms—previously called “The Deadly Quartet,” syndrome X, or insulin resistance syndrome—is now commonly referred to as metabolic syndrome. Almost one in four American adults has metabolic syndrome, which increases the risk of diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke. (Johns Hopkins) "
