As a new member, I've read about a debate going on over metformin. I have no idea what the debate is and would like to try to "catch up". Is there a thread I should read?
My son was dx'ed at age 21 with diabetes type 2, but he's always needed a much larger dose of metformin....we called it glucophage back then. He had stomach problems, so had to space out his doses. Once he did that, they settled down. I'm unsure of Advandia and Actos....my old family physician, now passed away, said they were to protect the kidneys from the metformin. They were even beginning to market "advantament"....a combo metformin/advandia drug. Then the news came out about the increased heart attack rate with advandia and I just stopped taking it. I've asked my new GP several times if I should be taking Actos for protection and she says no. She also says advandia is still a good drug and has never been taken off the market. So that's pretty much my whole metformin story. Still hope I can catch up. Hugs, Bobbi Posted on 11/04/09, 04:11 pm |

If I were you, I would seek support eleswhere in another group. This one is no longer functional or supportive.

Welcome Bobbi nice to see you join the group.
Well I think that rather than surrendering the support group which is where the new people come for support - OK Bobbi has been on DS a while and knows her way around a bit - and this board should be for support and help. Sorry guys but I think if you abdicate this board you are leaving many new people without what they will need. This sort of situation has happened in quite a few boards on DS at various times - and it just takes time and some people to stand up and say enough already to take them back. So how about it?

Hathani..
That is a great idea..... I totally agree with you regarding support....... It is really difficult to be diagnosed a T2D...... I have real concerns about people coming here for support.... Yet coming away with the thought that is their fault that they are diabetic... Or that the meds given are evil... This is hard enough without the scare tactics of Socks...

Don't listen to Socks re Metformin (its the generic of Glucophage). I have been on max dose for 11 years - no side effects whatsoever.
New members should not be part of this group. Diabetes Connect and Dealing with Diabetes is far superior because they all have diabetes, they all support and none of them are rulers or try to rule.
