Dr. Peter Boling of Virginia is trying to convince Congress that doctors should go back to house calls. He claims that it offers more compassionate care and lessens overhead which in turn decreases health care costs.

" House calls were a good thing, I'm old enough to remember when our doctor still made them, not packing a sick kid into the car and sitting for hours in a crowded waiting room while they screeched and spread their germs to everyone else.

In traditional medicine, talking native american and that type traditional, the healer always went to the sick persons home...they realized that the home and family also contributed to why the person was sick. Now we know that stress and other mental/emotional factors play a big part in our being sick, this is something they always knew and factored in. "

" The good ole days are gone for that unfortunately. I think the regulations of insurance and medicare have made it almost impossible for the caring Doctor to take the time with a patient in the office let alone a house call.
Medicine has become a business but there are a few good guys out there who really care about us.
And who knows so many Docs have quit here and gone to teaching but someday they may go back to housecalls. It would be nice when it is a necessity. "

" I think this would be wonderful for housebound patients. The elderly or handicapped who cannot get out to the doctor easily. It would definitely increase the quality of their lives.

Georgia that is a good point about being able to assess the home. Far too many people live in less than desirable conditions. But they are unable to get help or to express themselves.

I would like to see how this would be regulated. I think there is alot of room for abuse, but with proper standards, will definitely be a good thing. "

" Michael Jackson had a doctor at his house that gave him drugs he shouldn't of had and it killed him. It's probably better to be treated in a professional setting where you can be monitored and there are others around to witness what's going on. "

" True Donna, but I think that is the exception rather than the rule. Most people aren't able to pay for the things Michael Jackson did.

But also, that is why very strict checks and balances would have to be in place.

Really though, when you think about it, you have the same amount of privacy in an office setting as in a home. If a doctor is corrupt it doesn't matter where he practices at. "
